Wall beds in Poverest
How we make wall beds for Poverest
Many people now work from home in a room that also has to sleep guests. A wall bed with a desk or shelves beside it lets the room do both, without the bed taking over. Cable routes for the desk can be planned in, while new sockets are for your electrician. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are room for a desk and a guest bed and a guest room that sits empty most of the time.
A loft conversion is a common way to add a bedroom to a semi or an interwar house, and the slope can take storage cut to its angle. A big part of the housing around Poverest is interwar, semi-detached or detached. We work in lofts that are already converted, with each piece scribed to the slope and set level.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the wall bed we have designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it is finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Post-war bedrooms are normally simple shapes, which suits fitted furniture along a whole wall, fixed to suit the wall.
If you live in a flat close to St Mary Cray station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. For an older house near St Andrew's, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Close to Jubilee Country Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

What else we make in Poverest
Flats, leases and landlords
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you get in touch.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
What it’s made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
On an external wall, moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice, alongside good ventilation.
Shelves
We size each shelf for its span and load.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
A standard bed is simple and needs no mechanism, which is a fair point in its favour. But if the room has other jobs to do, a wall bed lets it do them every day. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and interwar homes often have all three. Fitted furniture is made around them.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

Questions we’re often asked
Do you make wall beds for homes in Poverest?
Yes, we work across Bromley, Poverest included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.
I live near St Mary Cray station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
Is it possible to add a desk beside the wall bed?
Yes, and it’s one of the best ways to use the wall. Shelves and cupboards around the bed make the most of the space, while new sockets are for your electrician.
How long will the wall bed take to fit?
How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
How fitting works for wall beds
Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.
- You contact us about a wall bed for a spare room or studio.
- At the design visit we plan the bed cabinet and check the stairs, landings and any lift. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
- We send a quote in writing.
- In our workshop we build the bed cabinet in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We carry the sections in, assemble them and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
Before we arrive
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Starting with a design visit

Advice
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
