The problems wall beds solve

Some want a room that can change as the family does. We often hear from people who want a playroom or study that can still sleep guests without giving up the floor.

Here’s what wall beds can help with:

  • More floor space in a studio flat
  • A study that doubles as a spare room
  • A storage wall with a bed inside
  • Hiding the bed when it is not in use

If you live near Crystal Palace Dinosaurs, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?

How we make wall beds for Anerley

We build the bed housing from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray painted in our workshop or hand painted. From the front, the folded bed can look like a set of tall cupboards, so the room doesn’t read as a bedroom by day. If you are living with a studio that works by day and night and a guest room that sits empty most of the time, wall beds made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Older bedrooms normally have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of homes around Anerley are that old. Fitted furniture can run right up to the ceiling or the cornice, with high storage for the things you use least. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed, so the furniture suits the house.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Bedrooms in Anerley: local notes

About 47% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Anerley went up before 1919, and about 20% between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List records 13 entries within half a mile of the centre of Anerley. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Purpose-built flats are more common around Anerley than across Bromley: about 41% of households, against about 23%, the 2021 Census shows. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.

Kingswood House, about 1.3 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. For a family home near James Dixon Primary School, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Fitting day, step by step

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so wall beds are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the room. Mention who the bed is for.
  2. We visit, measure and discuss the bed, shelves and desk. What the wall is made of matters, as the bed has to be fixed securely.
  3. A written quote is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the bed and storage in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

Before fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Ask for a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

Is bespoke worth it?

A normal bed has nothing to fix to the wall, and that has its appeal. Where the room needs to be more than a bedroom, a wall bed earns its place day after day. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Questions from Anerley

I live in a flat in Anerley. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Wall beds are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do you make wall beds for homes in Anerley?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London, and Anerley is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

How long will the wall bed take to fit?

It depends on the design. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote, so you will know before we start.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

What does a wall bed cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The bed size, the cabinet and any storage around it all make a difference. For a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Flats, leases and landlords

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.
