How we make window seats for Poverest
Each window seat is built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits a seat that takes weight every day, and MDF gives the fronts and panels a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it is brought to your home in Poverest and fitted. People typically come to us about a ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay and wanting a quiet place to read; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
An interwar house tends to have truer walls than a Victorian one, though rarely square corners. Much of the housing around Poverest is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Lids, doors and drawers are set level on site so they run true.
Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Questions from Poverest
Can you fit furniture in a home close to St Mary Cray station?
Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Poverest?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Typically not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent.
Is it possible to have a window seat above a radiator?
Yes. A radiator under the window is common, and the seat is designed to work with it. A grille in the front lets the heat into the room. Storage above a radiator stays warm, so it suits things that do not mind that.
Do pictures help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, get in touch through our contact form.
What is a window seat made from?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Next to a window, the moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
How fitting day works
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it’s worth mentioning at the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.
- You get in touch and let us know about the window, and whether a radiator sits beneath it.
- At the design visit we measure the window and the radiator, and plan a grille or open front so heat isn’t trapped.
- A written quote follows, covering the seat and the grille.
- We make the seat and grille in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The seat is fitted with the radiator grille in place, so the heat keeps moving.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Advice
Window seats in Poverest: local notes
About 35% of the homes in the area around Poverest went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 30% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Poverest include Spring Hall (Grade II), about 0.6 miles east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Bromley included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Poverest, as it does anywhere else in London. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.
If you live in a period home close to St Andrew's, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front. If your children go to Poverest Primary School or a school nearby, window seats can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Living in a block of flats near St Mary Cray station? Then it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

What else we make in Poverest
What we do not do
We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Work on the window frame or glass
- New sockets or lights near the window, which are for your electrician
- Painting the walls of the bay
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.
What goes into it
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
- Lift-up lids or drawers
- Radiator grilles
- Hand-painted finish
- Spray-painted finish
What it is made from
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting gives a slightly softer look than spraying. It can be applied on site, in a colour agreed with you. It can match the woodwork around the window.
Birch plywood
A window seat needs to be sturdy. That is why we use birch plywood for the frame and top. It suits the drawers below too.
Flats, leases and landlords
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising at the measuring visit.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases.
How we price window seats
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- How square the room is
- How many doors and drawers there are
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Before the design visit
These details help when you get in touch:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
