Wall beds in Crystal Palace: what you get

We fit wall beds in Crystal Palace and across London. First comes a design visit, where we measure and look at the wall, followed by a quote. The cabinets are made in our workshop and fitted in your home. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a studio that works by day and night and storage built around a fold-down bed.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, bedrooms range from box rooms to large rooms with bays and sloping ceilings. Fitted furniture can suit each, sized and laid out for the room. Every wall in Crystal Palace homes is measured on site, because none is assumed to be square.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Pricing wall beds in Crystal Palace

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It’s enough to send:

  • Examples of the look you are after
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • How you want to use the space
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. Either way, the day is planned at the design visit. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. First, you let us know about the room and how you’d like it to work.
  2. We come to measure, look at the wall and floor, and go through the layout with you.
  3. We send a quote setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Ask for a quote

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Related advice

Before and after fitting day

The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:

  • Plan a cupboard for spare bedding
  • Measure the clear space in front of the wall
  • Consider how many people will sleep in it
  • Give the paint time to cure fully

Keep to the mattress size and weight the mechanism allows, because a mattress outside those limits can affect the balance. A new mattress should suit the mechanism too.

Think about the route into the room. Furniture made in a workshop comes in sections sized for stairs, landings and lifts, so let us know about narrow stairs or a small lift.

Where other trades come in

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:

  • Getting consent under your lease
  • Wiring for lights or chargers
  • Choosing a mattress for you

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish

FAQs: wall beds in Crystal Palace

I live in a flat in Crystal Palace. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Wall beds are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do you cover homes near Crystal Palace station?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

What does a wall bed cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, storage and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

How it is made

Birch plywood

Shelving around the bed needs to stay straight, and birch plywood helps.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site after fitting. It is easy to touch up later.

Wall beds in Crystal Palace: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Crystal Palace, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 36%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Part of Crystal Palace is in the Crystal Palace Park Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Bromley has its own. If your street in Crystal Palace is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay through the council may be needed. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Kingswood House, about 0.9 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. If you live near Crystal Palace Park, keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright. If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul's, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.
