Bedroom storage in Plaistow
About 47% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Plaistow went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 20% before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Plaistow. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 47% of homes in the neighbourhood around Plaistow date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead.
For a flat near Sundridge Park station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For families living near Burnt Ash Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

How we make wall beds for Plaistow
We build the bed housing from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. From the front, the folded bed can look like a set of tall cupboards, so the room does not read as a bedroom by day. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a living room with a bed that folds away and a proper bed instead of a sofa bed.
If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Plaistow, the third bedroom is often small, sitting over the stairs. That’s where wall beds earn their place, making a small room work as a dressing room, a guest room or both. Every wall is measured and checked, even in a house that looks square.
The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Could you do it yourself?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.
The problems wall beds solve
Others want the bed to be part of a wider storage wall. Cupboards and shelving either side make the whole wall useful.
If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:
- A guest room that sits empty most of the time
- A bed that looks like cupboards by day
- Shelves or a desk around the bed
- A home office that also sleeps guests
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Quernmore Secondary School, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Why bespoke in Plaistow?
Off-the-shelf units can leave gaps at the sides or top. We can build to the full height and width, with storage or shelves filling the rest of the wall. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Fitted furniture is designed around them.
We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Fitting day, step by step
You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.
- We start with what the room is for, day and night. A desk or shelving around the bed can be part of it.
- At the design visit we measure the room, look at the wall and discuss the design. We also check there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
- A written quote follows, covering the cabinet, the storage and the finish.
- We build and finish the bed housing and storage in our workshop.
- We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly.
Before fitting day
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Keep pets in another room while we work

What affects the price in Plaistow
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- The overall size of the piece
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.
Before the design visit
You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Your postcode and the borough
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
To get a quote, get in touch through our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.
FAQs: wall beds in Plaistow

Do you make wall beds for homes in Plaistow?
Yes, Plaistow is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Bromley and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote.
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
Can a wall bed have storage around it?
Yes, and it’s one of the best ways to use the wall. A desk beside the bed suits a room that is an office by day, while new sockets are for your electrician.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.
How long will the wall bed take to fit?
It depends on the design. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.
