Ask about wall beds in Luxted
Is it time for wall beds?
Some want a room that can change as the family does. We often hear from people who want a playroom or study that can still sleep guests when it is needed.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- A living room with a bed that folds away
- A hobby room with a bed for guests
- Room for a desk and a guest bed
- A spare room that is rarely slept in
For families living near Cudham Church of England Primary School, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- Will the quote be in writing?
Wall beds in Luxted
The mattress has to suit the mechanism; the mechanism maker sets the size, depth and weight it can take. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so the mattress you choose fits. If your home has a playroom that can sleep visitors and a living room with a bed that folds away, wall beds made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.
If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Luxted, the spare room may be the small one at the front, over the hall and stairs. That is where wall beds earn their place, making a small room work as a dressing room, a guest room or both. Nothing is assumed: the room is measured wall by wall.
Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

From workshop to your room
At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.
- We start with how the room is used and who’ll sleep there. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
- We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of.
- A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
- We build and finish everything in our workshop.
- We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.
Before fitting day
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
Arranging a design visit
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly during the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

FAQs: wall beds in Luxted
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Luxted?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.
Do you make wall beds for homes in Luxted?
Yes. Luxted is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
Is a wall bed safe?
Safety depends on a secure fixing and sensible use. The mechanism is fixed exactly as its maker sets out; you lower it steadily with the floor clear.
How much does a wall bed cost?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A single bed cabinet and a full wall with shelves and a desk are very different jobs, so we price it after measuring. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.
When you need someone else
Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:
- Building work to make a wall sound
- Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
- Making good the walls after other work
If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.
What it’s made from
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Shelves or a desk alongside
- Spray-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Fold-down bed mechanism

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
