Wall beds in Temple Fortune

We fit wall beds in Temple Fortune and across London. It starts with a design visit to measure the room and check the wall, followed by a quote. We make everything in our workshop and fit it in your home. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are a living room with a bed that folds away and a storage wall with a bed inside.

Older London houses often have sash windows, and their position, along with any shutters, affects where furniture can go. For one of the older homes that make up a large share of the housing around Temple Fortune, the layout lets the sash open fully and keeps the light unblocked. Doors on fitted pieces are hung to clear the bed and any radiator.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the wall bed we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Fitting day, step by step

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wall bed and any storage.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves or desk are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.

Before fitting day

  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

How to get a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Honest limits

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Choosing a mattress for you
  • Building work to make a wall sound
  • New sockets, lighting or wiring (your electrician)

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Is it time for wall beds?

Some want a room that can change as the family does. We often hear from people who want a playroom or study that can still sleep guests when it is needed.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • A bed that fills a little-used room
  • A flexible room for a growing family
  • A study that doubles as a spare room
  • Shelves or a desk around the bed

If you live in a period home close to Saint Mary and Archangel Michael Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Pricing wall beds in Temple Fortune

There is no set price, because there is no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What we need to know

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

FAQs: wall beds in Temple Fortune

Can you make wall beds for a home in Temple Fortune?

Yes, Temple Fortune is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Barnet and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

My home in Temple Fortune is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Can you fit a wall bed to a stud wall?

That is something we look at when we measure. Solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings, and the mechanism maker’s instructions set what’s needed.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form.

How much does a wall bed cost?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, storage and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

How much space does a wall bed need?

It depends on the bed size and the mechanism. We measure up and make sure the bed has room to fold down.
