Wall Beds in Southgate

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on wall beds in Southgate starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • A living room with a bed that folds away
  • A home office that also sleeps guests
  • A real mattress for visitors

Wall beds in Southgate

Many spare rooms are only just big enough for a bed, and a bed that’s used a few times a year takes most of the floor. When the bed is folded away, the room is open again for a desk, a hobby or just space. Guests still get a proper bed when they stay. If you are living with a living room with a bed that folds away and shelves or a desk around the bed, that’s what wall beds are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Bedrooms in interwar houses often have a picture rail but a plainer ceiling than a Victorian room, so fitted furniture can often run neatly to the ceiling. If yours is one of the interwar houses or semis that make up much of the housing around Southgate, the top cupboards can hold suitcases and spare bedding. Skirting boards are cut around neatly.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A normal bed has nothing to fix to the wall, and that has its appeal. Where the room needs to be more than a bedroom, a wall bed earns its place every day. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What you get with us

What happens on fitting day

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know during the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You tell us about the room and who the bed is for. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
  2. We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of, as the bed must be fixed securely.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
  4. We build and finish everything in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in

Moisture-resistant MDF

The moisture-resistant grade suits cabinets on cooler external walls, alongside good ventilation.

Birch plywood

Shelves beside a wall bed often carry books, and birch plywood helps them resist sagging.

Bedroom storage in Southgate

About 59% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Southgate went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 16% before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Southgate, Historic England’s list includes Essex House and Arnoside House (Grade II*), under half a mile south-east, and Avington Croft Cottage Holcombe House (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 56% of households in the area around Southgate live in detached or semi-detached houses, according to Census 2021. A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

Living in a block of flats near New Southgate station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your children go to Ashmole Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. Close to Grovelands Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

What affects the price in Southgate

The price for your room depends on:

  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The width and height of the space
  • Parking near your home
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

Getting in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • How you want to use the space
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
