Need wall beds in Streatham?
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, rather than a quick order. In return, the cabinet, shelves and finish are designed together. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.
Rooms that are not square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.

Wall beds in Streatham: what you get
A home office that doubles as a guest room is a common request. A wall bed with a desk or shelves beside it lets the room do both, without the bed taking over. Cable routes for the desk can be planned in, while new sockets are for your electrician. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about storage built around a fold-down bed and a study that doubles as a spare room.
In houses built before 1919, a floor can drop noticeably from one side of a room to the other, which matters around Streatham, as a large share of homes there date from before 1919. Pieces stand on a levelled plinth or adjustable feet, so the doors line up and the gaps run straight. Where the wall bows, the edge is scribed to follow it.
The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What happens on fitting day
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays at the design visit.
- You tell us about the room.
- At the design visit we agree the layout and the colour.
- You receive a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
- The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
- We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly. New paint needs gentle use while it cures.
How to prepare
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
Getting a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Flats, leases and landlords
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.
Streatham homes and wall beds
In the area around Streatham, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 55%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 17%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 12 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Streatham. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. About 30% of households in the streets around Streatham live in flats in converted or shared houses, according to Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 2 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. If you live in a period home close to St Leonard's Church, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

FAQs: wall beds in Streatham
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Can you make wall beds for a home in Streatham?
Yes, we work across Lambeth, Streatham included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.
Is a wall bed safe?
A wall bed is designed to be used regularly as long as they’re fixed and used as the maker specifies. We fix the mechanism securely to a sound wall or floor, and you should follow the maker’s guidance on lowering and lifting it.
Will a wall bed work on my wall?
It depends on the wall and floor. The mechanism must be fixed to a sound wall or floor, as its maker specifies, so we check it at the design visit.
What space does a fold-down bed take up?
You need clear floor in front of the cabinet for the bed to fold down, as well as the depth of the cabinet itself. We check the space when we measure, so the design works.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Do you need wall beds in Streatham?
The most common reason is a spare room that is rarely slept in. A standard bed takes up the floor all the time, and a wall bed lets the room be used every day.
Here’s what wall beds can help with:
- A guest room that sits empty most of the time
- A study that doubles as a spare room
- A flexible room for a growing family
- A proper bed instead of a sofa bed
