Fitted bedroom furniture in Norbury

In the neighbourhood around Norbury, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 43%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 34%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. 5 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Norbury. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Terraced houses are home to about 31% of households in the area around Norbury, according to Census 2021. London terraces typically have a small back bedroom and alcoves in the main bedroom, which suit fitted furniture.

Kingswood House, about 1.9 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. Near listed buildings like Norbury Hall, less than half a mile west of the centre of Norbury, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. For an older house near St Oswald, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Wall beds for homes in Norbury

We build the bed housing from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Doors on the front can look like a run of cupboards, so the room does not read as a bedroom by day. People typically come to us about a home office that also sleeps guests and a living room with a bed that folds away, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A good part of the housing around Norbury is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What affects the price in Norbury

What you pay depends on:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The internal fittings

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

What to send when you get in touch

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. When you’re ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

From workshop to your room

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and how often the bed is used.
  2. We come to measure, look at the wall and floor, and go through the layout with you. We also check there is clear space in front to lower the bed.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinet, the storage and the finish, for you to look over.
  4. We build and finish the bed housing and storage in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Arranging a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it during the design visit.

Boards, parts and paint

Shelves

We can add shelving around the bed to make use of the whole wall.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits a cabinet you want to look crisp and is finished before it reaches you.

Common questions about wall beds

Is Norbury in the area you cover for wall beds?

Yes, we work across Croydon, Norbury included, and across the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Norbury?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough sizes. To send them, use our contact form.

Is a mattress included with the wall bed?

The mattress needs to suit the mechanism, including its size, depth and weight. We can talk you through what the mechanism allows, so the mattress you choose fits.

How long does fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will talk it through at the design visit.

Why bespoke in Norbury?

Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, rather than a quick order. In return, the cabinet, shelves and finish are designed together. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the design visit, then set it out in the quote.
