How fitting works for window seats

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made during the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. First we hear about your bay or window and what you’d like.
  2. At the design visit, every side of the window is measured. Then we go through the seat height and storage.
  3. We agree the seat, the storage and the finish, and send a written quote.
  4. The seat is built in our workshop and painted in your colour.
  5. The seat is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you. A radiator grille, if there is one, lets the heat through.

Preparing the room

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Ask for a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

About our window seats in Chelsfield

Sash windows are a feature of many older London homes. A seat beneath one needs to sit below the cill so the window still opens and closes easily. Where there are working shutters, the seat must leave room for them to fold back. We check all of this at the measuring visit in Chelsfield. If your home has wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room and standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay, that is what window seats are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. Around Chelsfield, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, fitted storage near the front door can take much of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

The problems window seats solve

For a child’s room, a seat under the window adds storage and a cosy spot. Drawers make it easy for children to reach their things. It helps keep the room tidy.

Here’s what window seats can help with:

  • A nursery or bedroom short of storage
  • No comfortable place to sit in the light
  • Wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room
  • A ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Martin of Tours, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

How to choose a carpenter in London

Looking after your furniture

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Check whether there’s a radiator under the window
  • Think about the cushion you’d like and who will make it
  • Choose a colour that suits the room
  • Decide whether you’d like a lid, drawers or both

When we’ve finished fitting, the seat and its storage are ready. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Avoid placing heavy objects on the painted surfaces while it hardens.

Keep the radiator grille clear so the heat can reach the room. Keeping it clear helps the radiator work as it should. Things stored near a radiator stay warm, so choose what goes there with that in mind.

FAQs: window seats in Chelsfield

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Chelsfield?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

I live near Chelsfield station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

How long will the window seat fitting take?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The seat is made in our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We work tidily and keep the room as clear as possible.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

Boards, parts and paint

Lift-up lids

A lift-up lid gives access to the full depth of the seat. It suits blankets, toys and things you do not need every day. We make the lid to open and close cleanly.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. It suits the frame and the seat top, which take weight every day. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Window seats in Chelsfield: local notes

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 59% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Chelsfield, with about 18% built between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. Chelsfield is partly covered by the Chelsfield Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If you live near Hewitt's Chalk Bank, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place. For families living near Chelsfield Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.
