  • No space for toys and games
  • A bay with no furniture that fits
  • A radiator that makes the space hard to use

Common questions about window seats

Do you make window seats for homes in Chiswick?

Yes, we work across Hounslow, Chiswick included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do you cover homes near Chiswick station?

Yes. We cover all of Hounslow and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

Which is better under a window seat, a lid or drawers?

It depends on what you will store and how often you’ll reach for it. A lift-up lid opens the full depth, which suits bulky things you do not need every day, while drawers mean you do not have to move the cushion.

Will a window seat work below a sash window?

Yes. The seat is set below the cill so the window can still open and close. Where there are shutters, the seat is planned so they still open fully. These details are measured when we visit.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.

About our window seats in Chiswick

Plenty of period homes across London have sash windows. A seat beneath one needs to sit below the cill so the window still opens and closes easily. If the window has shutters, the seat is planned so they can still open fully. These details are measured when we visit your home in Chiswick. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are needing more storage in the room and a room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat.

With a large share of homes around Chiswick built before 1919, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Those have to stay reachable, so any storage is designed around them. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the window seat we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Caring for painted furniture

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Consider how often you’ll reach for what’s stored
  • Decide on cushion thickness before the design visit
  • Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
  • Check whether there’s a radiator under the window

If you are having a cushion made, we’ll give you the exact size of the seat. Wait until the paint has cured before putting the cushion on, to protect both the fabric and the finish.

Condensation on the glass can drip onto the cill and the seat, so wipe it away. A little fresh air helps reduce condensation. Don’t leave water sitting on the painted surface.

Where other trades come in

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Plumbing work on the radiator under the window
  • Repairs to sash windows, cills or shutters
  • Electrical work around the seat

Not sure whether your space suits window seats? You can message us from the contact page and we’ll tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

Fitted storage in Chiswick

About 53% of the homes in the area around Chiswick went up before 1919, and about 14% between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how window seats are fixed and fitted. Part of Chiswick is in the Glebe Estate Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home in Chiswick is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. We will plan where the van can stop.

For a family home near The William Hogarth Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. If you live near Turnham Green, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Chiswick House Conservatory, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

How it’s made

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for angled panels and radiator grilles. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which is stable and takes paint well. Most of what you see on the finished seat is MDF.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting gives a slightly softer look than spraying. It can be applied on site, in a colour agreed with you. It can be matched to the window woodwork.

From workshop to your room

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. First we hear about your bay or window and what you’d like, with a note of any radiator or shutters.
  2. We measure the window, the cill and any radiator or shutters.
  3. We agree the seat, the storage and the finish, and send a written quote. Take your time with it.
  4. The seat is made at our workshop and painted in your colour. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The seat is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you. A radiator grille, if there is one, lets the heat through.

Before we arrive

  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Flat-pack or bespoke?

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
