Window seats for homes in Isleworth

We make the seat itself, and you can source a cushion to the size we give you. You can then choose the fabric and style yourself. We make the seat to suit the cushion you plan, with a suitable depth and height. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat and no comfortable place to sit in the light.

In an older home, panelled doors and painted mouldings may suit; in a newer one, plain flat doors may fit better. Whatever your home in Isleworth is like, the door style is part of the design conversation. The paint colour is agreed with you, whichever finish you pick.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Boards, parts and paint

Doors and drawer fronts

Where there is a radiator, part of the front is a grille. It’s painted to match the other fronts. Around it, the fronts can be drawers, doors or panels.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be applied once the seat is in place. Marks can be touched in without much trouble. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot advise on your lease.

Your questions about window seats in Isleworth

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Isleworth?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Will a conservation area stop me having window seats fitted in Isleworth?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Can you build a seat beneath sash windows?

Yes. Sash windows are a natural place for a seat in many period homes. The cill height and any shutters are measured carefully, so the seat sits neatly and the window still works. We do not repair sashes or cills.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

Should I choose a lift-up lid or drawers?

Often a mix works best. Drawers are easier for daily use, and a lid section holds larger things. For children’s rooms, drawers are typically easier to manage. We’ll suggest a layout at the design visit.

Fitting day, step by step

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.

  1. First we hear about your bay or window and what you’d like, with a note of any radiator or shutters.
  2. We measure the window, the cill and any radiator or shutters.
  3. The design is agreed and a quote in writing follows. Take your time with it.
  4. Every part is built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
  5. The seat is fitted, scribed to the walls and checked with you.

How to prepare

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Starting with a design visit

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Window seats in Isleworth: local notes

In the area around Isleworth, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 34%) and the years since 2000 (about 22%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Within a mile of the centre of Isleworth, 6 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If you live on or close to a main road in Isleworth, let us know during the design visit. We will plan where the van can stop.

If you live near Old Deer Park, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For a family home near St Mary's Catholic Primary School, window seats can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Could you do it yourself?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Why people ask for window seats in Isleworth

Some people want a reading spot. A window seat, perhaps with shelves either side, does exactly that. It is often the most-used seat in the house.

Here’s what window seats can help with:

  • A nursery or bedroom short of storage
  • A ready-made bench that does not fit the bay
  • Unused space below a sash window
  • An empty bay that doesn’t get used

For an older house near Church of All Saints, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
