Woodlands Window Seats

Window seats for bays and under sash windows, with storage inside, for homes in Woodlands. We measure, design and quote first, then make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • A recess under the window doing nothing
  • No space for toys and games

Pull-out drawers

Drawers let you see everything at once. They’re often easier for children than a lid. We make the boxes from birch plywood for strength.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits panels, grilles and plain fronts alike. We do it in our workshop, where the finish can be kept even. The colour is your choice.

Window seats for homes in Woodlands

Each window seat is made at our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the seat its strength, as it is strong and holds screws firmly, while MDF takes paint well for the fronts and panels. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s brought to your home in Woodlands and fitted. Most enquiries start with standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay and wanting a quiet place to read; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A good part of the housing around Woodlands is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse boards that need to stay reachable are designed around.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Flats, conversions and lettings

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Fitting day, step by step

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are typically straightforward, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. Window seats arrive in sections and are assembled in place.

  1. It starts when you contact us about a window seat. Say how you’d like to use it, if you know.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about how you’ll use the seat.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. Your window seat is made in our workshop, shaped to the window.
  5. The seat is fitted and set level, ready for a cushion.

Preparing the room

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

How to get a quote

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Questions from Woodlands

I live near Isleworth station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Hounslow and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is Woodlands in the area you cover for window seats?

Yes. Woodlands is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hounslow and London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details.

What happens when you come to measure?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

What is a window seat made from?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Next to a window, the moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Can you fit a window seat under a sash window?

Yes. The seat is set below the cill so the window can still open and close. If there are working shutters, we leave room for them to fold back. These details are measured when we visit.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Do you need window seats in Woodlands?

After a room has been redecorated, a window seat can finish it off. It’s worth talking to us before decorating, so the work can be timed sensibly. We make and fit the seat, and your decorator handles the walls.

We are often asked to help with:

  • A bay window that’s hard to furnish
  • A room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat
  • Looking for a reading spot by the window
  • A sash window with space beneath it going to waste

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Gumley House (convent), original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke seats are scribed to the walls and set level, so there are no gaps at the sides or the base. A ready-made piece sits in the space rather than being part of it. In an older room, the difference shows. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors aren’t perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Why us?

  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • Saturdays by prior arrangement
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
