Window seats for homes in Lampton

Window seats work in bedrooms and children’s rooms as well as living rooms. With deep drawers or a lift-up lid, it becomes useful storage as well as a place to sit. Drawers can be easier than a lid for children to use. Whatever the room, the process for a home in Lampton is the same. If your home has no comfortable place to sit in the light and a child’s room that needs storage and seating, window seats made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Lampton, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Those spaces, along with bays and hallways, are where fitted storage can add the most. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

The problems window seats solve

Many people want a window seat for the storage beneath it. A seat with a lift-up lid or drawers can hold toys, blankets, books or games. It adds storage in a space you are not otherwise using.

People usually get in touch with us about things like these:

  • Nowhere to keep blankets, toys or books
  • A bay window that’s hard to furnish
  • Unused space below a sash window
  • Off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window

The wider area includes historic houses like Osterley House, about 1.1 miles north. If your own home is a period one, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

How we price window seats

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The number of doors and drawers

Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

What to send when you get in touch

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • How you want to use the space
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, use our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

Questions from Lampton

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Hounslow station?

Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Lampton?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Is a lid or drawers better for a window seat?

Often a mix works best. Drawers are easier for daily use, and a lid section holds larger things. For children’s rooms, drawers are typically easier to manage. We talk it through when we visit.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you drop us a line using the contact form.

How much does a window seat cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. It depends on the size and shape of the window, the storage you want and the finish. To get a quote, get in touch through our contact form and we’ll arrange a design visit.

What happens on fitting day

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually simple, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. Window seats arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You get in touch about a window seat.
  2. We visit to measure and talk through the design, the storage and the finish.
  3. You receive a written quote for the design, materials and finish.
  4. The seat is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is done there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The seat is fitted and scribed, and any hand painting is done on site.
  6. Fresh paint takes a while to cure, so go gently with the seat and lids at first.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Starting with a design visit

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Advice

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

For a straight window with no radiator, a ready-made bench can do the job. Bespoke work makes sense when the window is a bay, there is a radiator below, or you want storage built in. We’re happy to give an honest view at the measuring visit. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, which shows up against standard furniture. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Luke, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front. Living in a block of flats near Hounslow station? Then the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

What window seats can’t fix

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Work on the window frame or glass
  • Plastering and decorating around the seat
  • Plumbing work on the radiator under the window

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.
