Boards, parts and paint
Spray-painted finish
Spraying in the workshop means the doors come to your home finished. Give the paint time to cure fully.
Birch plywood
Drawers get heavy use, so we often make the boxes from birch plywood.
Fitted wardrobes in Chiswick
Doors can be hinged or sliding. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors save that space in a narrow room, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. We weigh them up with you at the design visit. Most enquiries start with a room too narrow for hinged doors and an awkward slope in a loft bedroom, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Older bedrooms usually have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Chiswick date from then. That height can be used, with fitted furniture taken up to the cornice and top cupboards for occasional things. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed, so the furniture suits the house.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Before and after fitting day
These points come up often when people plan fitted wardrobes. They help before and after fitting:
- Work out the split between long and short hanging
- Empty the area where we’ll be working
- Tell us which walls face outside
- Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. At first, handle the doors with care.
Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose.
Bedroom storage in Chiswick
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Chiswick were built before 1919 (about 53%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 14%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Chiswick, 13 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The share of homes built before 1919 around Chiswick, about 53%, is well above the figure for Hounslow as a whole, about 16%, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of fitted wardrobes.
For families living near The William Hogarth Primary School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. Hogarth's House, about 0.2 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?
Most people come to us because they’ve simply run out of space. Clothes spill onto chairs, into spare rooms and under the bed. A fitted wardrobe uses the full height of the wall, which adds a lot of space without taking more floor.
If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:
- Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
- An awkward slope in a loft bedroom
- Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
- Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
Living in a block of flats near Chiswick station? Then it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.
Before you choose who makes it
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
- How parking will work on your street
How fitting day works
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as we will have talked about at the measuring visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You get in touch and let us know about the room.
- At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
- Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
- At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.
Preparing the room
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
Starting with a design visit
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Chiswick
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
My home in Chiswick is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted wardrobes are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.
Do you do the electrics?
No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.
How long will the fitting take?
The fitting depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The wardrobes are built in our workshop first, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.
Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?
The space in front of the wardrobe usually decides it. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense. We look at it with you when we measure.

What fitted wardrobes can’t fix
It is worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Redecorating around the wardrobes
