Loft storage in Hadley Wood, Enfield

Planning loft storage for a home in Hadley Wood? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote, before anything is made.

  • Boxes and suitcases with no home
  • Wasted space behind the knee walls
  • A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe

Loft storage in Hadley Wood

How we price loft storage

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What we need to know

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Loft storage for homes in Hadley Wood

Our work is in loft rooms that are already converted, or lofts that are boarded. The conversion itself is not our work, and conversions come under Building Regulations. Once the room is finished, we can design storage to suit it. If you have a converted loft in Hadley Wood, the design visit is the first step. If your home has a loft room that doubles as an office or guest room and standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs, that is what eaves cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Some homes from the 1950s and 1960s have original built-in cupboards on the landing or in the hall, which can be rebuilt with better shelves and doors. Many homes around Hadley Wood date from between 1945 and the early 1970s, so those spaces are worth a look. The new storage is made to the opening and fixed to suit the wall.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf pieces come in the maker’s finishes. We paint the storage in the colour you choose, so it can match the walls and the woodwork. Post-war rooms are often compact, and standard furniture sizes waste space at the ends and the top, which fitted furniture uses. The pieces are made to the room’s own widths.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Is it time for loft storage?

Most people get in touch because the eaves are going to waste. Behind the knee walls, there is space nobody can reach. Cupboards and drawers built into the knee wall put it to work.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • Boxes piled on loft boards
  • Clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom
  • A dormer that is not being used

If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul's Church, eaves cupboards in a converted loft are scribed to slopes that are rarely even.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight

Fitting day, step by step

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Post-war houses tend to have straightforward halls and stairs, so carrying in is rarely difficult. Even so, the route is measured at the measuring visit. The pieces are assembled, levelled and fixed in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the loft room.
  2. We visit to measure and look at what’s behind the knee walls, and go through the design with you.
  3. A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. Your storage is made at our workshop, shaped to the loft.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill, with the doors and drawers checked with you.

Arranging a design visit

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

FAQs: loft storage in Hadley Wood

Is parking a problem for fitting in Hadley Wood?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Hadley Wood affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Will eaves storage block the ventilation?

It shouldn’t, if it is designed properly. We design eaves storage so it doesn’t block ventilation or squash insulation. If you have concerns about what’s already behind the eaves, it’s worth asking whoever converted the loft.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.

Do you do plastering or decorating?

No. Plastering and decorating are not part of our work. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. It goes into the carcasses, the drawers and the shelves. The edge can be left on show or painted.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting on site lets the storage be finished alongside the woodwork around it. Marks can be touched in without much trouble. Like any new paint, it needs time to cure fully.
