Window Seats in Penge

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on window seats in Penge starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • A period room that needs furniture to suit it
  • Looking for a reading spot by the window
  • A radiator that makes the space hard to use

Window seats designed for your room

How we make window seats for Penge

A window seat can hide a surprising amount of storage. A lift-up lid opens the whole space beneath the seat, while drawers mean you don’t have to move a cushion to reach things. At the design visit in Penge, we’ll help you choose. We make window seats from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room and toys spread across a bedroom floor.

Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of homes around Penge are that old. Window seats are scribed to the walls and levelled on site so doors, lids and drawers run true. Original skirting and mouldings are met neatly, and the paint colour is agreed with you.

After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Fitting day, step by step

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it helps to tell us during the design visit what’s outside. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the bay or sash window is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the window and the radiator, and plan a grille or open front so heat is not trapped.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the seat and the grille.
  4. We make the seat and grille in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and scribe it to the walls, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Arranging a design visit

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a written quote. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

What it costs

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Parking and unloading on your street

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Getting in touch

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. It is enough to send:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • How you want to use the space
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.

Your questions about window seats in Penge

My home in Penge is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Do you cover homes near Penge West station?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

What materials do you use for window seats?

The seat is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the frame and seat, while the fronts and grilles are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

With a ready-made bench, the colour is the maker’s choice. We paint the seat in the colour you choose, so it sits with the skirting, the shutters or the walls. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

When is bespoke worth it?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Making use of tricky spaces in Penge

In the streets around Penge, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 20%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List records 12 entries within half a mile of the centre of Penge. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 23% of households in the area around Penge live in flats in converted or shared houses, the 2021 Census shows. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.

Living in a block of flats near Penge West station? Then window seats are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For an older house near Church of St John the Evangelist, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear. Kingswood House, about 1.4 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a seat under a sash window can keep shutters and cills clear.
