Window seats in Anerley

We make each window seat in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits a seat that takes weight every day, and MDF gives the fronts and panels a smooth surface for paint. It’s then spray-painted or hand-painted and fitted in your home in Anerley. If your home has no space for toys and games and standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay, that is what window seats are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of homes around Anerley are that old. Each piece is scribed and levelled on site so it looks straight in a room that is not. Original skirting and mouldings are met neatly.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

How fitting day works

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch and describe the window.
  2. We visit to measure the angles of the bay and the floor, and discuss the design.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. In our workshop we make each section of the seat from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the seat is set level and scribed to follow the walls and floor, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

How to prepare

  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Getting a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Advice

Flats, leases and landlords

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the design visit.

What it is made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

Windows can run with condensation in winter, so a moisture-resistant grade of MDF makes sense. It gives a smooth base for paint, and holds its shape in the bay.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. The seat and its frame are made from it, as they carry weight daily. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Why people ask for window seats in Anerley

Some people plan a window seat as part of updating a room. Mention any decorating plans at the design visit so the timing works. We make and fit the seat, and your decorator handles the walls.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • Looking for a reading spot by the window
  • A nursery or bedroom short of storage
  • A room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat
  • Unused space below a sash window

Kingswood House, about 1.3 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly.

How we price window seats

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Spray painting or hand painting

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What to send when you get in touch

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. It is useful to include:

  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Your postcode and the borough

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

FAQs: window seats in Anerley

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Anerley?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

My home in Anerley is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Window seats are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Can you build a seat beneath sash windows?

Yes. The seat is set below the cill so the window can still open and close. If there are working shutters, we leave room for them to fold back. These details are measured when we visit.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
