Window seats in Shooter's Hill
Window seats in Shooter's Hill
Many windows have a radiator beneath them. Over a radiator, the seat needs a grille or open front so warmth can reach the room. We design the grille into the front of the seat and leave space around the radiator. When we visit in Shooter's Hill, we’ll check the radiator and plan around it. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a period room that needs furniture to suit it and toys spread across a bedroom floor.
Walls in houses from between the wars are usually straighter than in older ones, but seldom perfect. Around Shooter's Hill, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Each piece is levelled on site, so doors, lids and drawers line up.
The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Where other trades come in
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:
- Painting the walls of the bay
- New sockets or lights near the window, which are for your electrician
- Fabric covers and cushions

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit.

How fitting day works
Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.
- You get in touch and describe the window.
- We visit to measure the angles of the bay and the floor, and go through the design.
- We send a written quote.
- In our workshop we make each section of the seat from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit the seat in your home, trimming the edges to meet the walls and cill, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
How to prepare
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
Arranging a design visit
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Tips worth knowing
The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:
- Decide if the seat is part of a larger piece
- Move furniture away from the window so we can measure
- Choose a colour that suits the room
- Consider how often you will reach for what’s stored
A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. It is worth keeping a record of the paint colour. Spray-painted surfaces wipe clean with a soft, damp cloth.
Every so often, look at the hinges and any handles. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If a lid or drawer starts to catch, send us a few details through our contact form and describe what’s happening.
Common questions about window seats
Will a conservation area stop me having window seats fitted in Shooter's Hill?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Shooter's Hill?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Can I send photos before the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough measurements. To send them, message us from the contact page.
How long is the fitting for a window seat?
How long fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Because everything is made in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the room as tidy as we can while we work.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You do. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
It’s something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Fitted storage in Shooter's Hill
About 53% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Shooter's Hill went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 27% before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for window seats, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Part of Shooter's Hill is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of inner London. For fitting in Shooter's Hill, a van typically needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice.
