Built-in bookshelves in Shooter's Hill
Books weigh a lot, and a wall of them puts real load on the fixings. We fix built-in bookshelves to sound walls with fixings that suit how the wall is built, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall. If a wall is weak or the plaster is loose, it’s best put right before fitting. If your home has shelves that sag under books and shelves deep enough for large books, built-in bookshelves made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Shooter's Hill, so that layout is worth knowing well. We tend to plan built-in bookshelves along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the built-in bookcase we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
Built-in bookshelves for homes in Shooter's Hill
In the area around Shooter's Hill, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 53%) and before 1919 (about 27%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List records 8 entries within half a mile of the centre of Shooter's Hill. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 41% of households in the streets around Shooter's Hill live in terraced houses, the 2021 Census shows. Terraced houses in London often have alcoves beside a chimney breast, and built-in bookshelves are made to those widths.
If your children go to Shooters Hill Sixth Form College or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like The Bull Public House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Why bespoke in Shooter's Hill?
A standalone bookcase needs to be fixed to the wall for safety anyway, so the difference is smaller than it seems. What really changes is the fit, the strength of the shelves and the finish, all planned for your room. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors aren’t perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What happens on fitting day
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You get in touch and tell us what the shelves will carry, from paperbacks to records and ornaments.
- We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
- Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
- In our workshop we make the shelves from birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF, sized for the span and the load.
- The bookshelves are fitted and fixed securely, with the finish sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand on site.
Preparing the room
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Advice
Flats, blocks and rented homes
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you get in touch.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.
Do you need built-in bookshelves in Shooter's Hill?
Often, the books simply have nowhere left to go. They’re stacked on the floor, two deep on the shelves or packed into boxes. Built-in shelving uses the full height and width of a wall.
Requests we hear often include:
- Books with nowhere left to go
- Low shelves children can reach
- Empty alcoves that could hold books
- Shelves that suit a period room
The wider area includes historic houses such as Eltham Palace, about 1.7 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.
What to check before you book
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Whether they measure the room themselves

How are built-in bookshelves fixed to the wall?
That depends on how the wall is built. We fix bookshelves with fixings that suit the wall. Where a wall cannot take the load, we’ll say so.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Can built-in shelves be adjustable?
It is your choice: fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves brace the bookcase, while adjustable ones let you change the spacing later. Many people choose both.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.
