Window seats for your home in South Woodford
Window seats for homes in South Woodford
Sash windows are a feature of many older London homes. Under a sash, the seat is set below the cill so the window can still be used. Where there are working shutters, the seat must leave room for them to fold back. We check all of this at the measuring visit in South Woodford. If your home has a ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay and no comfortable place to sit in the light, that’s what window seats are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, so the tricky spaces vary too: a bay, the space under the stairs, a hallway recess or the eaves of a converted loft. Window seats are designed for the space you have. Meters, fuse boards and boilers keep the access they need.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the window seat we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

How fitting day works
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.
- To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the bay or sash window is enough.
- At the design visit we measure the window and the radiator, and plan a grille or open front so heat isn’t trapped.
- Your written quote sets out the seat, the grille, the materials and the finish.
- We make the seat and grille in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The seat is fitted with the radiator grille in place, so the heat keeps moving.
Before fitting day
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
Arranging a design visit
The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To book one, drop us a line using the contact form.

More for homes in South Woodford
Flats, blocks and rented homes
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease.
Materials and finishes
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF can be cut cleanly, which suits the angled panels of a bay and the pattern of a grille. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which is stable and takes paint well. It forms most of the visible parts.
Pull-out drawers
Drawers let you see everything at once. Children can usually manage drawers more easily than a heavy lid. The drawer boxes are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well.
Window seats for homes in South Woodford
Homes built before 1919 make up about 29% of the housing in the area around South Woodford, with about 29% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of South Woodford include The George Inn (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west, and Grove Lodge (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Redbridge sets its own rules. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.
If your children go to Oakdale Infants' School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. Valentines Mansion, about 2.3 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat.

Common questions about window seats
Do you make window seats for homes in South Woodford?
Yes, South Woodford is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Redbridge and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.
Do you cover homes near Wood Street station?
Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room.
Do I get to choose the colour?
The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
How is a window seat priced?
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The shape of the window, the mix of drawers and lids, and any grille all play a part. We set it all out in a quote in writing.
Which is better under a window seat, a lid or drawers?
Many seats use both. Drawers are easier for daily use, and a lid section holds larger things. In a child’s room, drawers tend to be simpler for small hands. We talk it through when we visit.
The problems window seats solve
The most common reason is wanting to make more of a bay or window. Bays are hard to furnish, and a built-in seat makes good use of them. It becomes a place to sit, read or look out.
We’re often asked to help with:
- A recess under the window doing nothing
- A radiator under the window getting in the way
- Wanting a quiet place to read
- Wanting new furniture to sit well in an older room
If your home is one of the older houses near Holy Trinity, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat.
What to check before you book
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
Bespoke window seats or ready-made?
Bespoke seats are scribed to the walls and set level, so there are no gaps at the sides or the base. A ready-made piece sits in the space rather than being part of it. The difference is most noticeable in a period room. Standard widths and heights seldom suit an actual room, so it leaves gaps at the ends and empty space above. Fitted furniture is made to the room.
We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.
