About our window seats in Ilford

A window seat can be part of a larger piece of furniture. Shelving on each side, with the seat in the middle, makes a natural reading spot. We design the seat and the surrounding units together, so the lines and the finish match. It’s worth talking through during the design visit in Ilford. We make window seats from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window and toys spread across a bedroom floor.

Around Ilford, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and houses of that age are full of tricky spaces: under the stairs, in the bay, along the hall and under the eaves of a converted loft. That’s where fitted storage comes in, scribed to walls that are rarely straight.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Questions from Ilford

Can you make window seats for a home in Ilford?

Yes. Ilford is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Redbridge and London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Ilford station?

Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do you do the electrics?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Looking after your furniture

New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Make sure any shutters still open fully
  • Decide whether you’d like a lid, drawers or both
  • Choose a colour that suits the room
  • Consider adding shelving around the seat

When we’ve finished fitting, the seat and its storage are ready. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Keep heavy objects and sharp edges off the fresh paint.

Lift lids gently and lower them carefully. It keeps the hinges and edges in good order. Do not overfill drawers, as heavy loads strain the runners.

Storage in Ilford homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Ilford were built before 1919 (about 58%) and since 2000 (about 20%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Ilford, Historic England’s list includes Chapel (Grade II*), under half a mile south-west, and Baptist Church and Institute (Grade II), under half a mile east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. The share of homes built before 1919 around Ilford, about 58%, is well above the figure for Redbridge as a whole, about 27%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.

If you live near South Park, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If your home is one of the older houses near St Alban's Church, window seats can be scribed to follow a bay that’s rarely square.

Where other trades come in

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Plastering and decorating around the seat
  • Repairs to sash windows, cills or shutters
  • Electrical work around the seat

What it is made from

  • Radiator grilles
  • Lift-up lids or drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish

How fitting works for window seats

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. To begin, get in touch through our contact form; a brief note on the bay or sash window is enough.
  2. At the design visit we measure the window and the radiator, and plan a grille or open front so heat isn’t trapped.
  3. Your written quote sets out the seat, the grille, the materials and the finish.
  4. We make the seat and grille in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The seat is fitted with the radiator grille in place, so the heat keeps moving.

How to prepare

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in

Advice

Do you need window seats in Ilford?

The radiator beneath a window can make it tricky to put furniture there. A seat with a grille in the front keeps the radiator working and the window usable. It’s a neat answer to a common problem.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • An empty bay that does not get used
  • Looking for a reading spot by the window
  • A nursery or bedroom short of storage
  • A radiator under the window getting in the way

The wider area includes historic houses such as Valentines Mansion, about 0.9 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
