Alcove units in Hyde farm estate

About our alcove units in Hyde farm estate

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. We can cut units around these details, stop beneath them or run up to meet them, whichever suits the room. The plinth height can match the skirting so the units feel part of the room. These details are settled when we visit. Most enquiries start with somewhere to keep books and records and shop-bought shelving that doesn’t fill the recess, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In a Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the front room usually keeps its chimney breast even where the fireplace has gone. Around Hyde farm estate, where a large share of homes date from before 1919, that is a common starting point. Alcove units built into the recesses either side are scribed to the plaster and cut around the skirting.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it is clear what’s included.

Flats, leases and landlords

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the measuring visit.

FAQs: alcove units in Hyde farm estate

Is Hyde farm estate in the area you cover for alcove units?

Yes. Hyde farm estate is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Lambeth and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Hyde farm estate?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

What happens to the chimney vent when alcove units go in?

We design around any vent so it stays open. Ventilation helps keep a capped chimney dry, which protects the units as well as the wall. Any existing damp should be dealt with before the units go in.

How do I get a quote for alcove units in Hyde farm estate?

Just tell us about the room on our contact form. It helps to send rough sizes and a few pictures, and then we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design.

Do you move sockets for alcove units?

We do not do electrical work. If you want sockets moved or added, your electrician should do that before we fit, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We can plan cut-outs and cable routes in the units around them.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Living-room carpentry in Hyde farm estate: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 48% of the housing in the area around Hyde farm estate, with about 18% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Hyde farm estate include St Bede's Roman Catholic Primary School (Grade II), less than half a mile east, and The Bedford Hotel (Grade II), about 0.5 miles west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. About 24% of households in the streets around Hyde farm estate live in flats in converted or shared houses, according to Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

For a flat near Balham station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For an older house near St. Stephen's Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units.

What prompts alcove units in Hyde farm estate

A chimney breast without its fireplace can leave a wall that feels unfinished. A pair of alcove units frames it and gives the wall a sense of order.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • A place for a small desk
  • Tired cupboards in the alcoves
  • Units that sit well with original features
  • Furniture that does not fit the alcove

If your children go to Telferscot Primary School or a school nearby, alcove units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

From workshop to your room

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You contact us about the alcoves you want to fill.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure up and agree the layout with you.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish set out, ready for you to check.
  4. We build the units in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. A spray-painted finish is applied there too, if that’s what you chose.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in

How to get a quote

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

Pricing alcove units in Hyde farm estate

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • How big the furniture is
  • Spray painting or hand painting

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Getting in touch

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

How it is made

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints beautifully, so we use it for doors, panels and the faces you see. It is a good match for alcoves on an external wall.

Plinths and scribe strips

In older houses, we normally scribe the sides and often the top too. It’s what makes a fitted unit look fitted.
