Stockwell Alcove Units
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on alcove units in Stockwell starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- Bowed walls and sloping floors
- Furniture that does not fit the alcove
- Cupboards in keeping with an older house
Alcove units for your home in Stockwell
About our alcove units in Stockwell
Alcove units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it works best. MDF suits doors and panels because it paints so evenly, while birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted on site, in the colour you choose. We make alcove units from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a desk that tucks into an alcove and empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast.
Most households around Stockwell live in purpose-built flats, from mansion blocks to modern developments. A mansion block flat often keeps its chimney breast, alcoves and high ceilings, whereas a modern flat tends to have plasterboard walls and an open-plan layout. Alcove units are designed for whichever you have.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Flats, leases and landlords
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
Alcove units for homes in Stockwell
In the neighbourhood around Stockwell, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 36%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The Stockwell Green Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Stockwell. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. About 21% of households in the streets around Stockwell live in flats in converted or shared houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
For a family home near St Andrew's Church of England Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If you live in a period home close to St. Andrew's, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at. If you live near Max Roach Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

How fitting day works
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where there’s no lift, each section is sized to be carried up the stairs safely. The stair turns and landings set the limit. The pieces are assembled in the flat.
- You get in touch and describe the alcoves you want to fill.
- We visit to measure the alcoves top, middle and bottom, and check the floor for level, then discuss the design with you.
- We send the design, materials and finish in a quote in writing.
- The units are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving a scribing allowance where they meet the walls.
- On fitting day we level the units and scribe the edges so they follow the line of the plaster. Spray-painted units arrive finished; hand-painted ones are painted once fitted.
How to prepare
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Let us know about parking near your home
Ask for a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What it is made from
Shelves
How thick a shelf needs to be depends on how wide the alcove is and what it holds. For a wide span or heavy books, we use a thicker shelf, a lip on the front or a support.
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even, factory-like surface. It suits a crisp, modern look as well as a classic one.
Questions we are often asked
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Stockwell?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
I live near Brixton station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Do alcove units affect the chimney’s ventilation?
We design around any vent so it stays open. Air moving through a capped chimney helps stop damp, which protects the units as well as the wall. If there is damp on the breast already, it is best sorted before fitting.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
Can I send photos ahead of the visit?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Can you build alcove units for alcoves that are not square?
Yes. We measure each alcove carefully at the design visit, make the units in our workshop and trim the edges on site to meet the wall, which closes the gaps you’d see with standard furniture.
Honest limits
Not everything around alcove units is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Painting the walls, ceiling and woodwork around the units
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- Making good damaged walls before fitting
If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.
