How we make fitted wardrobes for SW12
Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We also think about who uses it, keeping rails at a height they can reach. Most enquiries start with standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall and a bedroom that never feels tidy; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about at the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
- You get in touch with some details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
- We visit to measure the room and talk through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too. Let us know about parking as well, as a van usually needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
- You receive a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
- In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
- Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.
What affects the price in SW12
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It is useful to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.
What you get with us

How to get a quote
Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

There is a railway station in Balham itself: Balham station. A little further out are Southside Wandsworth (1.9 miles north-west) and London Sewing Machine Museum (0.6 miles south-west).
Fitted wardrobes across SW12: local notes
Many older bedrooms across SW12 keep a chimney breast with an alcove on each side. Where there is not one, fitted wardrobes can run along a full wall instead. Each design is scribed and levelled on site.
In SW12, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 53%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. More than half of the homes in the SW12 postcode district (about 53%) were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 27% of households in the SW12 postcode district, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.
Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs, and depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. Let us know about parking during the design visit.
Balham: Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary, under half a mile south-west of the centre of Balham, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If your children go to Ravenstone Primary School or a school nearby, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.
What it costs
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- Parking near your home
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we have measured up.
Getting in touch
You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Examples of the look you are after
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will arrange a design visit.
When is bespoke worth it?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.
Before and after fitting day
None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:
- Tell us which walls face outside
- Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
- Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
- Think about where you will keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
If you have sliding doors, keep the bottom track clear of dust and fluff to keep them running smoothly. Clear anything that falls into it.
Close doors gently and do not let them swing into furniture, and slide doors without forcing them. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
Is bespoke worth it?
Bought wardrobes come in the maker’s finishes. Fitted wardrobes are painted in a colour agreed with you. Bespoke work is not as quick as buying from a shop, since there’s a design visit, a quote and workshop time first.

Questions from SW12
How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.
What are your fitted wardrobes made from?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in SW12?
Yes. We cover SW12 and the rest of Wandsworth, as part of our work across all London boroughs. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.
Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?
It depends on the room. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing. We talk through both during the design visit.
Do you do plastering or decorating?
No. Plastering and decorating are not part of our work. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.
