Alcove units designed for your room
How we make alcove units for Little Portugal
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Units can be cut around them, stop just below them or run neatly up to them, whichever suits the room. The plinth height can match the skirting for a tidy line around the room. These details are settled when we visit. We make alcove units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are bare alcoves beside the fireplace and bowed walls and sloping floors.
Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Little Portugal, whether in older mansion blocks or more recent blocks. A mansion block flat often keeps its chimney breast, alcoves and high ceilings, whereas a modern flat tends to have plasterboard walls and an open-plan layout. Alcove units are designed for whichever you have.
The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Could you do it yourself?
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.
Questions from Little Portugal
I live in a flat in Little Portugal. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Will a conservation area stop me having alcove units fitted in Little Portugal?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Do both alcove units have to match?
It’s entirely your choice. Alcoves are often different widths anyway. They can match in style while doing different jobs.
How much will my alcove unit cost?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.
Materials and finishes
Shelves
We set shelf spacing around what you own. A shallower top shelf can keep things within reach.
Spray-painted finish
Because the units are sprayed before they come to you, there is less painting to do in your home, in the colour agreed with you. Treat the units gently while the paint cures fully.
Bespoke alcove units or ready-made?
Bought units stop at standard heights, which usually leaves a gap above. A bespoke unit can run up to the ceiling or finish just under the picture rail, depending on the room. In a flat, every bit of floor counts, and standalone furniture uses more of it than it needs. Fitted furniture can go to the ceiling and fill a recess exactly, leaving more floor clear.
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Looking after your furniture
None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:
- Look for a chimney vent that needs to stay clear
- Decide what goes behind doors and what goes on show
- Sort out damp patches before fitting
- Note the sizes of large things you want to store
To clean painted units, a soft cloth that’s barely damp is enough. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, as they can mark the finish. Wipe it dry when you have finished.
Watch for damp marks on the chimney breast or the walls near the units. Damp needs its cause fixing by the right trade, and it is easier to deal with before it spreads.

Fitting day, step by step
Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: alcove units are made in sections sized for each of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none, which the design allows for.
- You get in touch about alcove units and the room they’re for.
- At the design visit we measure up, agree the layout and talk about colour and finish. You can choose a spray-painted finish from our workshop or a hand-painted one done in your home.
- The written quote then sets out the design, the materials and the finish you have picked.
- We make the units in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood. If you chose spray painting, that’s done in the workshop too, for a smooth, even surface.
- We fit the units in your home and scribe them to the walls.
- Paint needs time to cure, so go gently with the new units at first.
How to prepare
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
