Why bespoke in Hyde farm estate?

Larders, dressers and tall cupboards are hard to find in standard sizes that suit an older room. We can build them to fit, with the same finish as the cabinets. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that do not meet the skirting. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

About our bespoke kitchens in Hyde farm estate

We make kitchens to fit the room, not a catalogue of set sizes. Each cabinet is made to the real measurements of your walls, floor and ceiling, so the runs fit neatly from wall to wall. You decide the layout, the storage and the colour with us, and the kitchen is made at our workshop before it is fitted. If you’re living with cabinets built around the appliances you choose and a larder for food and small appliances, kitchens made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Older homes usually have generous ceiling heights, and around Hyde farm estate, a large share of homes are that age. That suits tall larder cupboards and wall cabinets taken up to the ceiling. Moisture-resistant MDF suits a kitchen, and the paint finish is agreed in your quote.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the kitchen we have designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

From workshop to your room

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the kitchen. Say a little about the way you cook.
  2. We visit, measure and go through the layout, larder, dresser or island, where space allows.
  3. A written quote is sent to you, setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics. It’s useful to have those trades booked in good time.

Advice

Tips worth knowing

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. These habits help most:

  • Make sure walls are dry before cabinets go in
  • Know your appliance sizes early
  • Talk to your other trades in good time
  • Give the paint time to cure fully

Wipe up spills and splashes promptly, particularly around the sink and dishwasher. Even moisture-resistant materials last better when kept dry.

Choose your appliances before the design is finalised. Their sizes shape the cabinets, so late changes can be awkward.

What it’s made from

Spray-painted finish

We spray paint in the workshop for a smooth, factory-like finish.

Larder and dresser units

They’re a good way to use an alcove or the end of a wall.

Close to Wandsworth Common? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen. Kingswood House, about 2.6 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. Questions from Hyde farm estate

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hyde farm estate?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in Hyde farm estate?

Yes. Hyde farm estate is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Lambeth and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Do pictures help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Can I choose my own worktop and appliances?

The worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose, and the cabinets are made to suit them. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
