TV and media units in Hyde farm estate

Sockets often need to move for a built-in TV wall. That job is for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. It is best done before we fit. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about equipment running hot in a closed cupboard and boxes and consoles on the floor.

In streets where so much of the housing went up before 1919, as it did around Hyde farm estate, plenty of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. That can mean one pair of alcoves for shelving and the other for low cupboards, with the screen on a chimney breast between. Some internal walls in houses of that age are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit what’s behind the paint, and long shelves are sized so they don’t sag under books.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

Before and after fitting day

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Think about the viewing height from your sofa
  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
  • Note the size of each box and speaker
  • Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting

Painted finishes feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. At first, lift boxes and speakers into place rather than pushing them to avoid marks.

Keep heavy speakers and amplifiers on lower shelves.

Questions we are often asked

My home in Hyde farm estate is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Hyde farm estate?

Yes, we work across Lambeth, Hyde farm estate included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details.

How much will my TV unit cost?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. We send a written quote after the design visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Do TV units need ventilation?

Ventilation is designed in wherever equipment sits, using open backs, gaps or vented doors. We give each box its own space.

What prompts TV and media units in Hyde farm estate

Some want the TV to sit better in a period room. A built-in unit around the chimney breast lets it sit more quietly, rather than the focus of it.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
  • A screen at the wrong height
  • Nowhere good for speakers
  • Empty alcoves beside the TV

If your children go to Telferscot Primary School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

What to check before you book

  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked

How fitting day works

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You let us know about the room and what the unit needs to hold.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with ventilation for boxes and amplifiers.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing.
  4. Once you’re happy, the unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The unit is fitted in your home, ready for your equipment.

Before we arrive

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
