Under-stairs storage in Ivybridge

How we make under-stairs storage for Ivybridge

Where the space under the stairs opens onto a room, a compact desk can fit beneath it. A built-in desk with shelving and drawers can turn the space into a quiet corner for paperwork. Any new socket or light there is for your electrician, and we leave room and a route for the cable. It’s worth talking through during the design visit in Ivybridge. People typically come to us about a tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out and a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. With interwar houses, semis and detached homes a large part of the housing around Ivybridge, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Fitted storage in Ivybridge

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Ivybridge were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 42%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 24%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Ivybridge, 8 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 42% of households in the neighbourhood around Ivybridge, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

Near listed buildings like Church of All Hallows, about 0.5 miles south-east of the centre of Ivybridge, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. The wider area includes historic houses such as Richmond House, about 1.1 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage. For families living near Chase Bridge Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

From workshop to your room

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room.

  1. You get in touch with some details and, if you like, a sketch. It helps to say whether the meters are under there.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the stairs, the hall and what you need to store, and check where the meters and fuse board sit.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. We make the drawers, doors and carcasses in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

How to prepare

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

What under-stairs storage can’t fix

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Painting the hallway walls and ceiling
  • Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Pull-out drawers
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Is bespoke worth it?

Ready-made units are designed for shipping and quick assembly. Bespoke storage is designed for one space and built to suit it, using birch plywood for strong drawer boxes and moisture-resistant MDF for painted fronts. The right choice depends on how hard you want the space to work. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Questions we are often asked

Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in Ivybridge?

Yes, we work across Hounslow, Ivybridge included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details.

I live near Twickenham station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you build storage around a gas meter or fuse board?

Yes. Meters and fuse boards often sit under the stairs, and they need to stay accessible. We note them during the design visit and plan the drawers and doors around them. We do not move meters, so the storage works around their current position.

How long is the fitting for under-stairs storage?

How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We make every part in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

Could the space under my stairs take a desk?

Often, yes, where the space opens onto a room and there is enough height at one end. We can build a desk with shelves and drawers to suit the space. Any socket or light there is for your electrician, and we plan around it.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Before and after fitting day

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Consider the colour of the hall, the stairs and the skirting
  • Plan decorating around the fitting
  • Make a list of what you want to store before the design visit
  • Count the coats and pairs of shoes in daily use

If you chose a hand-painted finish, small marks can be touched in. Keep a little of the paint, or a note of the colour, for later. Spray-painted fronts have a smooth, even finish that wipes clean.

Keep the doors and drawers closed when the space isn’t in use. Overfilled drawers put strain on the runners, so it pays to sort them now and then. Wipe up any spills, particularly near the floor, before they dry.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.
