Ask about under-stairs storage in Kingsland

Is it time for under-stairs storage?

With more people working from home, some want a desk tucked under the stairs. If the space opens onto a room, a compact desk with shelves above can sit beneath the stairs. It’s a modest workspace, well suited to a laptop and the household paperwork.

Under-stairs storage can help with:

  • No room for a small desk or a place to work
  • Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
  • Open space under the stairs that collects clutter

If you live in a period home close to Holy Trinity Church, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Under-stairs storage for homes in Kingsland

Under-stairs cupboards often hold a gas meter, an electricity meter or the fuse board. These must stay easy to reach for meter readers and engineers. We plan the storage around them, normally with a door that leaves them in clear reach, so you gain storage without losing access. At the design visit in Kingsland, we note what’s there and design around it. If your home has space under the stairs that’s hard to use and a sloping corner nobody can reach, under-stairs cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Kingsland, and blocks often have rules on lifts, deliveries and when work can happen. It is useful to check them with the managing agent before fitting day. If the flat is leasehold, the lease may need checking before under-stairs cupboards are fixed to the walls.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the under-stairs cupboard we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Questions we’re often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Kingsland?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Is Kingsland in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?

Yes. Kingsland is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hackney and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.

Which works best under the stairs, drawers or cupboards?

Often a mix works best. Drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space, while a cupboard at the tall end takes coats, the vacuum or an ironing board. We talk it through during the design visit.

Can you match the storage to my hallway?

Yes. The colour is your choice and is agreed in the quote. We can spray it in the workshop or hand-paint it in your home. Either finish can follow a colour already in the hall.

What does an under-stairs cupboard cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. It varies with the size of the space, how many drawers and doors you want, and the finish. To get a quote, use our contact form and we will arrange a design visit.

What materials do you use for under-stairs storage?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Drawer boxes are birch plywood, as it is strong and holds screws firmly. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

A standard unit knows nothing about your meter or fuse board. Fitted in front of one, it can make access awkward for readings and safety checks. Bespoke storage is planned around them from the start. Ready-made furniture stops at a set height, whatever the ceiling, so storage is lost at the top. Built-in pieces use the full height.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. Drawer boxes and carcasses that take a load are often made from it. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting suits flat, panelled and angled fronts alike. It’s carried out in the workshop for a smooth, even coat. The colour is your choice.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made at our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking near blocks of flats can be limited, and loading may need planning, so tell us about bays, permits or any loading area at the design visit. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the space and what it holds now is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
  3. You receive a written quote for the storage.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with access to the meters planned in.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, and the meter access is checked with you.

Before fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Tips worth knowing

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Clear the space before the design visit if you can
  • Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes
  • Think about what you will keep in each drawer
  • Think about how your household uses coats and shoes

A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. It’s worth keeping a note of the colour so any touch-ups match. Spray-painted fronts have a smooth, even finish that wipes clean.

Sharp tools and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Put tools in a case so they do not knock the paint. A small chip on a hand-painted finish is easy to touch in.
