Wall beds in Kingsland
The bed mechanism must be fixed securely, exactly as its maker specifies, into a wall or floor that is sound enough to hold it. We check the wall and floor at the design visit, because the fixing has to suit what the wall is made of. If your home has a bed that looks like cupboards by day and a flexible room for a growing family, wall beds made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Kingsland, and in a flat, bedrooms rarely have space to spare. Fitted furniture can be planned floor to ceiling, so storage goes up rather than out. The furniture is built in sections that fit the route into the flat, and assembled once it is inside.
We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, rather than a quick order. What you get is one design that suits the room and the way you use it. Whether the ceilings are tall or low, standard heights rarely match them, which wastes the space above. Fitted furniture runs to the ceiling.
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Questions from Kingsland
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Kingsland?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Dalston Junction station?
Yes. We cover all of Hackney and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Typically not. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent.
How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?
It depends on the bed size and the mechanism. We measure up and make sure the bed has room to fold down.
Is it possible to add a desk beside the wall bed?
Yes, that’s a common request. Shelves and cupboards around the bed make the most of the space, and any new sockets are for your electrician.
Materials and finishes
Spray-painted finish
The colour is agreed with you before we spray.
Shelves
We size each shelf for its span and load.
Could you do it yourself?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
How fitting day works
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: wall beds are made in sections sized for each of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none, which the design allows for.
- We start with how the room is used and who’ll sleep there.
- We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of.
- A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
- The bed housing and any shelves are made at our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Keep pets in another room while we work

Bedroom storage in Kingsland
About 37% of the homes in the streets around Kingsland went up before 1919, and about 23% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List has 108 entries within half a mile of the centre of Kingsland. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. For fitting in Kingsland, a van normally needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Tell us what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Close to Shoreditch Park? Keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright. If you live in a period home close to Holy Trinity Church, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 1.1 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.
Kingsland is in the London Borough of Hackney, about 1 mile south of Shoreditch. From period terraces to newer flats in Kingsland, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Our Hackney coverage includes Kingsland, along with the rest of the borough.

When you need someone else
Not everything around wall beds is carpentry, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:
- Supplying mattresses
- Plastering or decorating the room
- Building work to make a wall sound
