Pricing alcove units in Ruislip Gardens

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • The internal fittings
  • How big the furniture is
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The number of doors and drawers

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Getting in touch

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

About our alcove units in Ruislip Gardens

Few alcoves in older houses are truly square. The walls lean, the chimney breast may bow and the floor often slopes, sometimes all in one recess. Each unit is made in our workshop to our measurements and scribed to the walls when we fit it, so the edges follow the plaster instead of leaving a gap. A plinth or adjustable feet take up any slope in the floor. Most enquiries start with shop-bought shelving that doesn’t fill the recess and clutter with nowhere to go, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In an area like Ruislip Gardens, where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, many homes have had the front and back rooms knocked together. The result is often a long room with a chimney breast, a good spot for alcove units. Cable routes for a TV or speakers, and space for set-top boxes, are planned during the design visit, with any new sockets left to your electrician.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

How fitting day works

Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so let us know at the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. You get in touch about alcove units and the room they’re for.
  2. At the design visit we measure up, agree the layout and talk about colour and finish. You can choose a spray-painted finish from our workshop or a hand-painted one done in your home.
  3. The written quote then sets out the design, the materials and the finish you have picked.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the units in your home and scribe them to the walls.
  6. Paint needs time to cure, so go gently with the new units at first.

Advice

Common questions about alcove units

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Ruislip Gardens?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to South Ruislip station?

Yes, homes across Hillingdon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Are alcove units spray painted or hand painted?

Either a spray-painted or a hand-painted finish. A sprayed finish is very smooth and even; a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later. We talk through both at the measuring visit.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

How tall should alcove units be?

It depends on the room and the look you want. Units can stop just under the picture rail or run up to the cornice. We agree the height during the design visit.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Built-in living-room furniture in Ruislip Gardens

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Ruislip Gardens were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 53%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how alcove units are fixed and fitted. There are 5 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Ruislip Gardens. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your street in Ruislip Gardens joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.

Ickenham Hall, about 1.3 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give alcove units a line to finish at. If you live in a flat close to South Ruislip station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For families living near Ruislip High School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Caring for painted furniture

Getting the most from alcove units starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Clear the alcoves before the design visit if you can
  • Mention parking and access when we visit
  • Think about what you’ll store before we meet
  • Book your electrician first if sockets need moving

Once the cupboards are filled and in daily use, a door may settle slightly. Hinges can normally be adjusted to bring a door back in line, so a small gap or rub is easy to correct.

Put the heaviest books and objects low down and spread the weight. Most sagging comes from shelves carrying more than they were planned for.

Bespoke alcove units or ready-made?

Bought units stop at standard heights, which typically leaves a gap above. We can take a bespoke unit to the ceiling or stop it at the picture rail, whichever looks right in your room. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
