Alcove units in South Lambeth

Alcove units in South Lambeth

In a tall room, a full-height alcove cupboard holds a great deal. In bedrooms, this often becomes a compact wardrobe or a place for bedding, while in a dining room it can keep china, glass and table linen. At the design visit we ask what you plan to keep there, and set out the shelves and rails around it. If your home has cupboards in keeping with an older house and walls too uneven for standard furniture, that’s what alcove units are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A large share of the homes around South Lambeth date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes rarely come with any built-in shelving or media storage. Alcove units can be planned around where the sockets and aerial points already are, with cable routes built in. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, which is fine for fitted furniture when the fixings are right.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

Questions we are often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in South Lambeth?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

My home in South Lambeth is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Who moves the sockets behind the alcove units?

Your electrician handles sockets and wiring. Ideally it’s done before fitting, and we can tell you where the units will sit so the sockets end up in the right place. The units are made with cut-outs and cable gaps to suit.

Do alcove units need to reach the ceiling?

It depends on the room and the look you want. In a tall period room, units can stop under the picture rail or the cornice. We agree the height at the measuring visit.

How do I get a quote for alcove units in South Lambeth?

Just get in touch through our contact form. Rough measurements and a few pictures help, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

How long will the fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on how many alcoves there are and how tall the units go, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Most of the making happens in our workshop, so the work in your home is about fitting and finishing.

Is it time for alcove units?

A busy family living room is another reason. Toys, games, post and chargers all need a home, and closed cupboards hide them away. Open shelves above are left for the things you like to see.

Here’s what alcove units can help with:

  • Clutter with nowhere to go
  • Somewhere to keep books and records
  • Cupboards in keeping with an older house
  • Empty alcoves either side of the chimney breast

For families living near Herbert Morrison Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How parking will work on your street
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Living-room carpentry in South Lambeth: local notes

About 46% of the homes in the streets around South Lambeth went up since 2000, and about 21% before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for alcove units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The centre of South Lambeth is within about a quarter of a mile of the South Lambeth Road Conservation Area. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so carrying the sections from the van to the door takes planning, especially for larger pieces.

If you live near Vauxhall Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Christ Church, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

South Lambeth is part of the London Borough of Lambeth, about 1 mile south of Stockwell. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, South Lambeth included. South Lambeth is one of the places in Lambeth where we make alcove units, and the borough has 22 places on our list.

In SW8, SW9 and SW1P, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Whether you live on a street such as Lett Road, Rita Road and Lorn Road or on one nearby, we can visit to measure up for alcove units. South Lambeth sits close to the A203. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Fitting day, step by step

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, with heavier pieces tied into the studs. Any new sockets or plumbing are for your electrician or plumber.

  1. It starts with a short message from you about the alcoves.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves and go through the design, including the paint finish.
  3. The written quote then sets out the design, the materials and the finish you’ve picked.
  4. The units are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The units are fitted and scribed to the alcoves; a hand-painted finish is done on site after fitting and is easy to touch up later.
  6. Paint needs time to cure, so go gently with the new units at first.

What we don’t do

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Replastering, which is a plasterer’s job
  • New sockets or wiring (your electrician handles those)
  • Finding and fixing the cause of damp

Not sure whether your space suits alcove units? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Scribed side panels
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Panelled or flat doors
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

How it’s made

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are the edges we trim on site to follow the wall. This closes the gap between a straight unit and a bowed alcove.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish suits alcove units in a period room. The colour is agreed with you, and touch-ups are simple if the units get marked later.
