What affects the price in South Lambeth

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. The main factors are:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How square the room is
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Getting in touch

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • How you want to use the space
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Wall beds for homes in South Lambeth

A wall bed needs clear space in front of it to fold down, and that shapes the design. Furniture in front of the bed has to be easy to move or kept out of the way when the bed is down. If you are living with a hobby room with a bed for guests and a real mattress for visitors, wall beds made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Stud walls in newer homes can carry pipes and cables, so we check before fixing into them. Many homes around South Lambeth date from 2000 onwards, so this check is routine. Heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you get in touch.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

When you need someone else

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Plastering or decorating the room
  • Supplying mattresses
  • Building work to make a wall sound

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Common questions about wall beds

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

I live in a flat in South Lambeth. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Will a wall bed work on my wall?

That depends on what the wall and floor are made of. The mechanism must be fixed to a sound wall or floor, as its maker specifies, and we look at this when we measure.

What happens on fitting day

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections built in our workshop come in next, one at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Any hand painting can be finished on site.

  1. To begin, tell us about the room on our contact form; a brief note on the room and how often guests stay is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the wall bed and any storage.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves or desk are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinet goes in, the mechanism is fixed securely and the bed is tried out.
  6. Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.

Before fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Starting with a design visit

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Bedroom storage in South Lambeth

In the streets around South Lambeth, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 46%) and before 1919 (about 21%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 22 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of South Lambeth. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. That normally means a van in South Lambeth needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Let us know about parking near your home during the design visit.

Buckingham Palace, about 1.8 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go. For families living near Herbert Morrison Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. Near listed buildings like Christ Church, about 0.5 miles east of the centre of South Lambeth, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
