TV and media units in South Lambeth: what you get
Speakers need their own thought. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen. Speakers work best in the open rather than behind closed doors, so we leave open bays for them. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about set-top boxes stacked on a stand and equipment running hot in a closed cupboard.
Newer homes often come with a TV point and sockets on one wall but nothing built around them. A good number of homes around South Lambeth went up since 2000, so TV and media units are typically designed around what’s already there. Any new socket is a job for your electrician, and we leave space and cable routes for it.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

South Lambeth homes and TV and media units
In the area around South Lambeth, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 46%) and before 1919 (about 21%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of South Lambeth, 22 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Fewer homes around South Lambeth date from before 1919 than across Lambeth: about 21%, against about 40%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We check what the walls are made of at the design visit, as they vary with the age of the home.
If you live near Vauxhall Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Christ Church, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Common questions about TV and media units
Can you make TV and media units for a home in South Lambeth?
Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London, and South Lambeth is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
I live in a flat in South Lambeth. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Can you add sockets behind the TV?
That is a job for your electrician. Ideally it’s done before fitting.
Does the unit work if the TV is on a bracket?
The unit can be planned either way. For a wall-mounted TV, the layout works around the bracket position.
How long are you in the house for fitting?
The fitting depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.
Do TV units need ventilation?
Media equipment runs warm and needs airflow. We design open backs, gaps or vents where it sits, rather than sealing it in a cupboard. Once it’s in, do not block the gaps.
What prompts TV and media units in South Lambeth
In an open-plan space, the TV wall is on show from everywhere. A built-in unit gives that wall order.
People usually get in touch with us about things like these:
- Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
- Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
- A TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall
- Empty alcoves beside the TV

Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Where they’ll park and unload
- A written quote that sets out the job
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Real projects you can actually look at
Fitting day, step by step
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so it’s useful to let us know at the measuring visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
- You contact us with details of the room, the TV and your equipment, and where the sockets are now.
- We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
- You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish.
- We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment.
Before we arrive
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
Ask for a quote
Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.
Related advice
Before and after fitting day
These points come up often when people plan TV and media units. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- Mention parking and stairs when we visit
- Think about whether you’ll upgrade the screen
- Think about which things need to be seen by a remote
- Find out how much space each box needs around it
When you change equipment, use the cable routes we planned instead of making new ones. It keeps the unit tidy.
Keep ventilation gaps and open backs clear as things change.
What it is made from
Spray-painted finish
A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, for a smooth, factory-like finish that suits clean, modern lines.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Wide panels around a screen need to stay flat. MDF gives a smooth surface for a painted finish.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.
