TV and media units in Wapping
If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan the panels and shelves around the bracket position, with a route for the cables behind the screen. If it stands on the unit, we size the top to suit. Most enquiries start with set-top boxes stacked on a stand and leads that show from every angle; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
A large share of the homes around Wapping date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes seldom have fitted storage in the living room. TV and media units can be planned around where the sockets and aerial points already are, with routes for cables designed in. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, which is fine for fitted furniture when the fixings are right.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

What it’s made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF has no grain to show through. We use the moisture-resistant grade.
Spray-painted finish
Because it’s sprayed before fitting, the unit comes painted. Treat it gently while the paint cures fully.

TV and media units for homes in Wapping
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Wapping were built since 2000 (about 37%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 29%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Wapping include Church of St Peter (Grade I), less than half a mile south-east, and Church of St George in the East (Grade I), less than half a mile north. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If you live on or close to a main road in Wapping, let us know at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
If you live in a flat close to Wapping station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your children go to St Mellitus College or a school nearby, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.
Wapping is in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, about 1 mile north-west of Whitechapel. Homes in Wapping are part of the area we cover for TV and media units. Our work takes in places right across Tower Hamlets, large and small.
In E1, E1W and SE16, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. You’ll find streets here like West Lane, Tunnel Road and Glamis Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for TV and media units. The A101 and A1210 run close to Wapping; on busy main roads, unloading TV and media units takes a little planning. We also cover St George in the East (1 mile north-west), East End of London (1 mile north-east), Shadwell (1 mile east), Whitechapel (1 mile north-west) and Ratcliff (1 mile east). Across the rest of Tower Hamlets, our area takes in Bethnal Green (2 miles north), Cambridge Heath (2 miles north), Mile End (2 miles north-east), Bow Common (2 miles north-east), Bromley (2 miles north-east) and Old Ford (3 miles north-east).

The problems TV and media units solve
Equipment on the floor is another reason. A media unit gives each box its own ventilated space, and keeps the floor clear.
Here’s what TV and media units can help with:
- A screen at the wrong height
- Leads that show from every angle
- Boxes and consoles on the floor
- Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard
The wider area includes historic houses such as Mansion House, about 1.3 miles west. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.
Before you choose who makes it
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
What happens on fitting day
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so it’s useful to let us know during the design visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturdays can be arranged.
- It starts with a short note from you about the TV wall.
- At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through.
- A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop we make the unit in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit.
How to prepare
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Empty the space we will be working in

Related advice
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
Your questions about TV and media units in Wapping
I live in a flat in Wapping. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Wapping?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?
Media equipment runs warm and needs airflow. We design open backs, gaps or vents where it sits, rather than sealing it in a cupboard. Once it is in, do not block the gaps.
Can the TV be wall-mounted with a unit around it?
We can plan for either a wall-mounted TV or one standing on the unit. If the TV is wall-mounted, panels and shelves are arranged around the bracket and cables, and if it stands on the unit we size the top for it.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf TV units come in a few set colours. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you. In an open-plan room, standalone pieces can look scattered, while fitted furniture can give the space structure.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.
