Bespoke kitchens in Blackfriars: what you get
A larder cupboard can hold more than a run of wall units. We can build larders with shelves, drawers or racks inside the doors, planned around what you store. Built into an alcove or the end of a wall, it puts tricky space to work. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are cabinets built around the appliances you choose and a pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers.
Post-war housing makes up a good share of the homes around Blackfriars, and in London that can mean houses or flats in blocks. For a flat, cabinets are made in sections that fit the stairs and lift. You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and the gas, plumbing and electrics are for the right trades.
The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the kitchen designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Blackfriars
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Blackfriars?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it. The City is inside the Congestion Charge zone too, and the ULEZ covers all of London.
Is Blackfriars in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?
Yes, we work across the City of London, Blackfriars included, and across the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Usually not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.
How much does a bespoke kitchen cost?
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A small galley and a large kitchen with a larder and island are very different jobs, so we price it after the design visit. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
How fitting works for bespoke kitchens
In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Post-war houses tend to have straightforward halls and stairs, which helps when the sections come in. Even so, the route is measured at the design visit. On the day, sections are joined, levelled and fixed.
- You let us know about the room and how you use it. Larders, dressers and islands can all be part of it, where space allows.
- At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout.
- We send a written quote setting out the cabinets, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
- We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe registered engineer handle the services. We don’t arrange these trades ourselves.
Before fitting day
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Starting with a design visit
Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Bespoke kitchens in Blackfriars: local notes
About 40% of the homes in the area around Blackfriars went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 27% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The Whitefriars Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Blackfriars. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Blackfriars is inside the Congestion Charge zone, which covers the whole City of London. Access, loading and timings are planned with that in mind.
Close to Bernie Spain Gardens? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen. Dr Johnson's House, about 0.2 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. If you live in a flat close to London Blackfriars station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
Blackfriars is within the City of London, about 1 mile east of City of London. Whether your home in Blackfriars is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Our the City of London coverage includes Blackfriars and the places around it.
We work across the SE1, EC1M and EC1N postcode area for bespoke kitchens. If your home is on a street such as Oat Lane, Bear Lane and Shoe Lane, or close by, we can visit to measure up for bespoke kitchens. Blackfriars sits close to the A4 and A40. If your home is on one of them, tell us during the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. We also cover Temple (1 mile west), Temple Bar (1 mile west), Bankside (1 mile south-east), Smithfield (1 mile north) and Clare Market (1 mile west).
Local landmarks in Blackfriars
We fit furniture in homes around London Nautical School, St Mary-at-Hill and St Alban's Church of England Primary School and the streets around them. You’ll also find Barts Health Archives (within half a mile north-east) and The Black Friar pub (less than half a mile south-east). There’s a railway station in Blackfriars itself: London Blackfriars station. Well-known places in the area include Montfichet's Tower (under half a mile north-east) and St Brides Crypt Museum (a few minutes’ walk north-west). Green spaces nearby include St. James's Park Lake and Ludgate Hill.
When is bespoke worth it?
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
Why bespoke in Blackfriars?
Larders, dressers and tall cupboards are hard to find in standard sizes that suit an older room. Bespoke joinery can be made for the exact space, with the same finish as the cabinets. In a flat with stairs or a small lift, large flat-pack units can be hard to get in, whereas fitted furniture is made in sections sized for the way in. It’s then assembled in the room.
Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.
