Bespoke Kitchens in Bankside

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make bespoke kitchens for homes in Bankside, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • A kitchen finished in your colours
  • A central island in a larger kitchen
  • Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls

About our bespoke kitchens in Bankside

Kitchens in period houses bring their own challenges. Few walls are flat, and floors often fall away from the walls, which shows up quickly along a run of cabinets. We scribe the cabinets to the walls and set them level on adjustable feet or a plinth, so the worktop you choose can sit level. We make kitchens from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about a kitchen planned around your appliances and more storage in a small kitchen.

A newer kitchen may have a wide glazed door or a big window on one wall, so storage has to be planned around the glass. Since many homes around Bankside date from 2000 onwards, tall units and an island or peninsula can make up the difference. Fixings are chosen for plasterboard where that’s what the walls are.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Boards, parts and paint

Larder and dresser units

We build larders with shelves, drawers and door racks, made to the space.

Doors and drawer fronts

We make doors in a style that suits the house, painted in a colour you choose.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Bankside

Is parking a problem for fitting in Bankside?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Is Bankside in the area you cover for bespoke kitchens?

Yes. We cover all of Southwark and the rest of London, and Bankside is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.

How long will the kitchen take to fit?

How long fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

What are the kitchen cabinets made of?

Our kitchens are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Fitting day, step by step

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about at the measuring visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Any hand painting can be finished on site.

  1. First, you tell us about the room.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and planning the layout, where space allows.
  3. You receive a quote in writing, setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The kitchen is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cabinets are fitted in your home, with plumbing, gas and electrics by your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Arranging a design visit

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Made-to-measure kitchens in Bankside

Homes built since 2000 make up about 48% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Bankside, with about 19% built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Bankside include Church of St Benet (Grade I), under half a mile north, and College of Arms (Grade I), less than half a mile north. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home is on or just off a main road, it’s useful to mention it. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

The wider area includes historic houses like Mansion House, about 0.6 miles north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. If you live in a flat close to London Blackfriars station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If you live in a period home close to St Mary Mounthaw, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

Bankside is about 3 miles south of East Dulwich, within the London Borough of Southwark. We cover Bankside as part of our work across Southwark, and the process is the same everywhere we work. In Southwark, Bankside is one of the places we cover, and the borough has 21 places on our list.

We work across SE1, EC4Y and EC4V for bespoke kitchens. Our area takes in homes on streets such as Bear Lane, Bush Lane and Swan Lane, along with the roads around them, whether you want bespoke kitchens or another piece made for the room. Bankside sits close to the A201 and A300. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the measuring visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Close by, we also work in Blackfriars (1 mile north-west), Temple (1 mile north-west), Temple Bar (1 mile north-west), Waterloo (1 mile south-west) and Smithfield (1 mile north). Other parts of Southwark we cover include East Dulwich (3 miles south), Herne Hill (4 miles south), Camberwell (2 miles south), Peckham (3 miles south-east), Rotherhithe (3 miles east) and Surrey Quays (3 miles south-east). As one of the bigger places in Southwark, Bankside is covered for bespoke kitchens and everything else we make.

Caring for painted furniture

New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Let us know about parking at the measuring visit
  • Choose your appliances before the design is final
  • Make sure walls are dry before cabinets go in
  • Think about how the cabinets will get in

Use the cooker hood or open a window when cooking, to keep steam off the cabinets. Good ventilation helps paintwork last.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before changing the kitchen. We cannot advise on your lease.
