  • More storage in a small kitchen

Bespoke kitchens for your home in Smithfield

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

How we make bespoke kitchens for Smithfield

We make kitchens for homes in Smithfield and across London. It starts with a design visit to measure and discuss the layout, then a written quote. Once agreed, the kitchen is made in our workshop and fitted in your home. How long the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your home has a pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers and a kitchen for a room that isn’t square, kitchens made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

In a compact flat kitchen, tall larders and good corner storage make the most difference. Around Smithfield, most households live in purpose-built flats. Your chosen appliances can be built in behind matching doors.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Why bespoke in Smithfield?

Standard cabinets come in set widths, so most layouts end in a filler panel. Bespoke cabinets are made to the room’s real sizes from wall to wall. Standalone furniture takes up floor without using the height of the room. Built-in pieces use the full height and the tricky corners.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Smithfield

How do you fit bespoke kitchens in a flat in Smithfield?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Farringdon station?

Yes, homes across the City of London and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

What materials do you use for kitchens?

Our kitchens are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then spray painted or hand painted. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

How long does fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll talk it through at the measuring visit.

Can I have a kitchen island?

If there’s enough room, yes. An island needs clear floor around it to open doors and move about, and we check this during the design visit. In a narrow kitchen, a longer run or a peninsula may suit better.

Kitchens in Smithfield homes

About 32% of the homes in the streets around Smithfield went up since 2000, and about 28% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 472 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Smithfield. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Streets close to central London are often narrow and busy, with loading bays in short supply, so the route from the van to your door is planned beforehand, particularly for larger pieces.

For families living near Charterhouse Square School, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen. If you live in a flat close to Farringdon station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Smithfield is about 1 mile south-east of City of London, in the City of London. Anywhere in Smithfield, the process is the same: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Our work takes in places right across the City of London, large and small.

We cover every part of the EC1V, EC1P and EC1R postcode area. If your home is on a street like Oat Lane, Shoe Lane and Long Lane, or close by, we can arrange a design visit for bespoke kitchens. Smithfield is near the A1 and A4; on busy main roads, unloading kitchens takes a little planning. Neighbouring places we cover for bespoke kitchens include Farringdon (1 mile north), Blackfriars (1 mile south), Holborn (1 mile west), Temple Bar (1 mile south-west) and Clerkenwell (1 mile north).

What happens on fitting day

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. With little room to spare in a flat, pieces come in as they’re needed. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Fixings are chosen for each wall, solid or plasterboard.

  1. We start with how you cook and what the kitchen needs to hold. Larders, dressers and islands can all be part of it, where space allows.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout. We note where the water, gas and sockets are now.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are built in our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and a Gas Safe engineer handle the services. We don’t arrange these trades ourselves.

Before we arrive

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Why people ask for bespoke kitchens in Smithfield

Uneven walls and floors make standard kitchens hard to fit. Gaps and wavy lines are hard to hide, and a bespoke kitchen is scribed and levelled to avoid that.

Bespoke kitchens can help with:

  • A painted dresser for the kitchen
  • Extra cupboard space
  • A kitchen island with room around it
  • A pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers

Dr Johnson's House, about 0.3 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

Looking after your furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Share the layout with your other trades
  • Wipe up spills promptly
  • Think about how the cabinets will get in
  • Make sure an island will not crowd the room

New paintwork takes a while to harden after fitting. Treat the doors and drawer fronts gently at first and avoid harsh cleaners. In time, mild soapy water and a soft cloth keep them clean.

Measure the route into the kitchen as well as the room. We make the cabinets in sections that fit through the doors and up the stairs, so let us know about tight turns or small lifts.
