Farthing Street Bespoke Kitchens

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make bespoke kitchens for homes in Farthing Street, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Tall larder storage
  • More storage in a small kitchen
  • Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls

Bespoke kitchens in Farthing Street: what you get

Islands work well in kitchens with room to walk around them. We check there’s comfortable space on every side, because a cramped island makes a kitchen harder to work in. If the room is narrow, we will suggest other layouts. If you are living with a kitchen island with room around it and room for everything in the kitchen, kitchens made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Farthing Street, walls tend to be truer than in older houses, though nothing is assumed. Cabinets are scribed where needed and levelled on site. Gas work is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register, and the plumbing and electrics are for your plumber and electrician.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Made-to-measure kitchens in Farthing Street

In the streets around Farthing Street, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 31%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 27%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for kitchens, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Farthing Street include Farthing Street Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile north-east, and Orange Court Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile east. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Bromley are set locally. If your street in Farthing Street is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay through the council may be needed. Let us know about parking during the design visit.

For a family home near Downe Primary School, planning a kitchen around family routines, with a place for school things, pays off. Close to South Park? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.

Do you need bespoke kitchens in Farthing Street?

A painted kitchen can be refreshed later, which suits a long-term home. Hand painting is simple to touch in or refresh over the years.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • A kitchen for a room that isn’t square
  • A kitchen island with room around it
  • A kitchen finished in your colours
  • More storage in a small kitchen

Living in a block of flats near Orpington station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

What to check before you book

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

How it is made

Moisture-resistant MDF

Most painted kitchen doors we make are moisture-resistant MDF, because it stays flat.

Doors and drawer fronts

Door style makes a big difference to the look, whether plain or framed.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

From workshop to your room

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room.

  1. We start with how you cook and what the kitchen needs to hold.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register handle the services.

Before we arrive

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Ask for a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Farthing Street

Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in Farthing Street?

Yes, we work across Bromley, Farthing Street included, and across the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

I live near Orpington station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Will you connect the sink and appliances?

No. We’re carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets. Your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, and we plan the cabinets around their work.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Honest limits

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Structural changes to the room
  • Painting the walls around the kitchen
  • Gas work, which is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
