Downe Bespoke Kitchens

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make bespoke kitchens for homes in Downe, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Room for everything in the kitchen
  • Cabinets for a narrow kitchen
  • A kitchen island with room around it

Tips worth knowing

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Make a note of what you use every day
  • Share the layout with your other trades
  • Let us know how parking works on your street
  • Measure the route into the kitchen

Doors are hung and adjusted when we fit them. Walls and floors shift slightly through the year, and hinges can be adjusted to keep the gaps even.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease early. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

How we make bespoke kitchens for Downe

We often use moisture-resistant MDF in kitchens, because it stays stable and takes paint beautifully. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. Cabinets are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in colours agreed with you. Most enquiries start with cabinets for a narrow kitchen and spaces sized for your oven and fridge, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Where a back room and kitchen have been knocked together, a kitchen-diner may have a chimney breast at the dining end, which can frame a dresser or tall cupboards. Around Downe, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, that’s a feature worth designing around. Any capped chimney stays ventilated.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

How it’s made

Doors and drawer fronts

The style of the doors sets the tone of the kitchen, whether plain or framed.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home after fitting. Chips are simple to touch in.

Flats, leases and landlords

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

Made-to-measure kitchens or ready-made?

Ready-made kitchens are widely available and often cheaper, and in a square modern room they can work well. In an older house with uneven walls, they tend to need filler panels and leave gaps. A bespoke kitchen costs more but is made for the room. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Downe homes and bespoke kitchens

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Downe were built between 1973 and 1999 (about 31%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 27%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Downe, Historic England’s list includes Down House (Grade I), about 0.6 miles south, and Church of St Mary the Virgin (Grade II*), under half a mile south. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If you live on or close to a main road in Downe, let us know at the measuring visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If you live near South Park, a cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen. If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary's Church, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. For families living near Downe Primary School, a drawer set aside for lunch boxes and water bottles keeps mornings calmer.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Downe

Is parking a problem for fitting in Downe?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

I live near Chelsfield station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

How long does fitting take?

It depends on the kitchen. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the measuring visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it’s worth mentioning during the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You tell us about the kitchen and where it is in your home.
  2. At the design visit we measure the kitchen and the route in, including stairs, doorways and any lift.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build the kitchen from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in pieces that suit the route in.
  5. We carry everything in and fit the cabinets, while your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

How to get a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
