For a sleek look, spray painting works well, and it’s done before fitting.

Bespoke kitchens in Hampstead Garden Suburb: what you get

A larder cupboard can hold more than a run of wall units. A larder can have shelves, deep drawers and racks, sized to what you keep in them. Built into an alcove or the end of a wall, it puts tricky space to work. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about cabinets for a narrow kitchen and a kitchen for a room that isn’t square.

In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Hampstead Garden Suburb, many kitchens have a garden door and a window that shape the layout. The cabinets and any larder or dresser are made for those walls. Your chosen worktop, sink and appliances are fitted into the design, with plumbing and electrics left to your plumber and electrician.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Bespoke kitchens in Hampstead Garden Suburb: local notes

In the streets around Hampstead Garden Suburb, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 44%) and before 1919 (about 39%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 179 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Hampstead Garden Suburb. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and kitchens can be designed to work around them. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Barnet is no exception. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Parking near your home is worth mentioning during the design visit.

For a flat near Brent Cross West station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. The wider area includes historic houses such as Heath Hall, about 0.8 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Jude, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

How we price bespoke kitchens

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How big the furniture is
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Before the design visit

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Any ideas or images you have saved

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Where other trades come in

We design, make and fit the furniture. In practice, that means:

  • Structural changes to the room
  • Gas work, which is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register
  • Making good walls and ceilings

Not sure whether your space suits bespoke kitchens? You can use our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Larders and dressers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Islands where space allows
  • Spray-painted finish

Fitting day, step by step

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You contact us about a bespoke kitchen.
  2. We visit to measure and talk through the layout and the finish, spray-painted or hand-painted.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied on site and is easy to touch up later.
  6. Treat new paint gently while it cures; the plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your own plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.

Arranging a design visit

Flats, leases and landlords

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an tricky room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them at the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.
