Hornsey Bespoke Kitchens

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make bespoke kitchens for homes in Hornsey, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Extra cupboard space
  • A kitchen finished in your colours
  • A larder for food and small appliances

Bespoke kitchens in Hornsey

A kitchen needs other trades as well as a carpenter. Your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, and we plan the cabinets around where their work goes. If your home has making the most of a galley kitchen and an island where space allows, kitchens made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

Around Hornsey, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the kitchen is often in the narrow rear part of the house, or in a side return that has since been extended. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so cabinets are scribed and levelled on site. The worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

From workshop to your room

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. First, you let us know about the kitchen you have and the one you want.
  2. We visit, measure the walls, floor and ceiling, and go through the design.
  3. You get a written quote for the cabinets, with the materials and finish set out, for you to read through.
  4. We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop.
  5. We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician handle the plumbing, gas and electrics.

How to prepare

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Starting with a design visit

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in Hornsey

Does a conservation area in or near Hornsey affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

My home in Hornsey is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Can you fit a kitchen in a room with uneven walls?

Yes, it’s something we deal with all the time. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so we scribe and level every cabinet.

How much time does fitting need?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the kitchen and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

How are bespoke kitchens priced?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A small galley and a large kitchen with a larder and island are very different jobs, so we quote once we’ve measured. To get started, use our contact form.

Made-to-measure kitchens or ready-made?

Neither choice is right for every home. If the room is square and the budget is tight, a ready-made kitchen may do the job. Where the room is awkward, the house is older or you want a painted kitchen that suits it, bespoke is normally worth considering. Standard units assume square rooms, and period homes seldom have them, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you get in touch.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Bespoke kitchens for homes in Hornsey

In the area around Hornsey, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 63%) and the years since 2000 (about 18%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Hornsey, Historic England’s list includes Tower of Old Parish Church of St Mary (Grade II*), under half a mile east, and Church of St John the Baptist (greek Orthodox) (Grade II*), under half a mile east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 63% of homes in the neighbourhood around Hornsey were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Kitchens in houses of that age often sit in a narrow back addition, with walls and floors that are not true, so cabinets are scribed and levelled on site.

For a family home near St Mary's CofE Primary School, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen. Bruce Castle, about 2 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true. Close to Priory Park? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.
