Bespoke kitchens in South Tottenham: what you get

A larder cupboard can hold more than a run of wall units. We can build larders with shelves, drawers or racks inside the doors, planned around what you store. Built into an alcove or the end of a wall, it puts tricky space to work. People usually come to us about cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls and extra cupboard space; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Sash windows and back doors to the garden are common in older kitchens. With a large share of the homes around South Tottenham built before 1919, the cabinets are planned around the windows and doors you have. Your plumber connects the sink where the design puts it. You choose the worktop, sink and appliances.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

How fitting day works

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so kitchens are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and how you cook.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the layout, the storage and where the appliances will sit.
  3. You receive a written quote for the kitchen cabinets. Plumbing, gas and electrics are not part of it: those are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.
  4. We build the cabinets, doors and drawer fronts in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day the cabinets go in, scribed and set level, ready for your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer to do their part.

Arranging a design visit

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

The problems bespoke kitchens solve

A common reason is a room that ready-made units don’t fit. Off-the-shelf cabinets come in set widths, leaving gaps at the ends and above. A bespoke kitchen is made to the room from the start.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • More storage in a small kitchen
  • A kitchen for a room that isn’t square
  • A painted kitchen in a colour you choose
  • Cabinets built around the appliances you choose

For families living near Earlsmead Primary School, planning a kitchen around family routines, with a place for school things, pays off.

What to check before you book

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Flat-pack or bespoke?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Ready-made units are made to fixed sizes, so most layouts end in a filler panel. Bespoke cabinets are made to the room’s real sizes from wall to wall. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it.

Kitchens in South Tottenham homes

About 46% of the homes in the streets around South Tottenham went up before 1919, and about 20% since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. The centre of South Tottenham is within about a quarter of a mile of the Seven Sisters and Page Green, Tottenham High Road Hist Corr Conservation Area. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in South Tottenham. We plan parking and access with you at the measuring visit.

Close to Chestnuts Park? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen. Near listed buildings like Parish Church of St Ann, about 0.5 miles west of the centre of South Tottenham, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

FAQs: bespoke kitchens in South Tottenham

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in South Tottenham?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in South Tottenham?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Do you work outside London?

No. We cover London only: all 32 boroughs and the City of London.

Can landlords use you for a rented flat?

Yes. It works the same way as any job: design visit, written quote, workshop, fitting. Access can be arranged through the letting agent.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it during the design visit.
