How we make window seats for Hackbridge

In many period houses, a bay window is the obvious place for a seat. A bay is rarely a simple shape, with angled sides and walls that aren’t quite straight. We measure every face and scribe the seat to follow them, so it sits neatly in the bay without gaps. It is a job that suits bespoke work, in Hackbridge or anywhere else. Typical reasons to get in touch are a nursery or bedroom short of storage and standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

An interwar house tends to have truer walls than a Victorian one, though rarely square corners. Much of the housing around Hackbridge is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Lids, doors and drawers are set level on site so they run true.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

When is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

From workshop to your room

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the window.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about how you’ll use the seat.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. Read it through and ask if anything is unclear.
  4. We make the seat, the lids or drawers and any grille in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The seat is fitted and set level, ready for a cushion.

Before fitting day

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Your questions about window seats in Hackbridge

Do you cover homes near Mitcham Eastfields station?

Yes, homes across Merton and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make window seats for homes in Hackbridge?

Yes, Hackbridge is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Merton and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We will design around them.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough sizes. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.

How long will the window seat fitting take?

How long fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Every part is made in our workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf benches come in the maker’s finishes. We paint the seat in the colour you choose, so it can match the woodwork or the walls. Walls in interwar houses are straighter than in older ones, but rarely perfect, and standalone units can lean or gap. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Tell us about parking during the design visit.

Why choose us

  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Saturdays by arrangement
  • Designed for the room you have
  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

Fitted storage in Hackbridge

About 49% of the homes in the streets around Hackbridge went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 14% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Hackbridge, Historic England’s list includes Base of Windmill at Mill House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-east, and Prospect House (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Merton sets its own rules. Where a street in Hackbridge is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

For an older house near St. Mark's Church, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat. Living in a block of flats near Mitcham Eastfields station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For families living near St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit.

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Decide on cushion thickness before the design visit
  • Think about whether you’d like shelves either side
  • Choose a colour that suits the room
  • Mention any parking rules on your street

If you’re having a cushion made, we will give you the exact size of the seat. Let the paint cure before the cushion goes on, so the fabric doesn’t stick or mark the finish.

Don’t block the grille with cushions or things stored in front of it. Keeping it clear helps the radiator work as it should. Storage over a radiator stays warm, so it is best for things that do not mind it.
