TV and Media Units in Hornsey

In Hornsey, we design TV and media units around the room you actually have. Your TV unit is designed at a visit to your home and made at our workshop.

  • Somewhere to keep games tidy
  • A cabinet that traps heat
  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste

TV and media units in Hornsey: what you get

Speakers need their own thought. A soundbar usually sits just below the TV. Speakers work best in the open rather than behind closed doors. We make TV and media units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste and games, controllers and remotes everywhere.

Older houses tend to come with picture rails, tall skirtings and cornices, and TV and media units need to meet those lines neatly. A large share of the housing around Hornsey went up before 1919, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about at the measuring visit. The top line can stop at the rail or run on to the cornice, depending on the room.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What happens on fitting day

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so it helps to tell us during the design visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the unit you have in mind, including the size of the screen.
  2. We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout.
  3. You receive a written quote setting out the unit, materials and finish.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the cable routes ready to use. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.

Advice

Living-room storage in Hornsey

Homes built before 1919 make up about 63% of the housing in the streets around Hornsey, with about 18% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Hornsey, 11 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. All of London, Haringey included, is inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Hornsey fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.

If you live near Priory Park, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Tower of Old Parish Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bespoke furniture takes longer than buying from a shop: it needs a design visit, a quote and workshop time. If you are renting or moving soon, a standalone stand may suit you better. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, and that space collects dust instead of storage. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Common questions about TV and media units

Is Hornsey in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes. Hornsey is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Haringey and London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Hornsey?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough measurements. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

How do I get started?

The first step is to fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?

Media equipment runs warm and needs airflow. The unit is planned with open backs or gaps where boxes go. Keep the vents clear once it’s in use.

Practical tips

Getting the most from TV and media units starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Note the screen size you have or plan to buy
  • Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished
  • Count your equipment, including routers and consoles
  • Note which boxes need line of sight for their remotes

Doors can settle a little once the unit is in use. Hinges can usually be adjusted to line them up again.

Avoid piling devices on one shelf because heat builds up between them. Each one needs space around it.

What prompts TV and media units in Hornsey

Some have tried off-the-shelf units that never quite fitted. Bought units seldom suit an alcove, a slope or an uneven wall, and a bespoke unit is made for the space.

If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:

  • Boxes with no ventilation
  • Equipment with nowhere proper to go
  • A TV stand that does not fit the wall
  • Cables trailing across the wall

If your children go to St Mary's CofE Primary School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?

Flats, conversions and lettings

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route at the design visit.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.
