Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so window seats are made in sections sized to get through. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You get in touch and describe the window.
  2. We visit to measure the angles of the bay and the floor, and go through the design.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The seat is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the angles we measured.
  5. On fitting day the seat is set level and scribed to follow the walls and floor, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Getting ready for fitting day

How to get a quote

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough measurements. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Advice

Window seats in Hornsey

The storage under a window seat is often as useful as the seat itself. A lift-up lid opens the whole space beneath the seat, while drawers mean you don’t have to move a cushion to reach things. At the design visit in Hornsey, we’ll help you choose. If you’re living with needing more storage in the room and looking for a reading spot by the window, window seats made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Ceilings and floors in homes built before 1919 are rarely level, and a large share of the homes around Hornsey date from then. Window seats are scribed to the walls and levelled on site so doors, lids and drawers run true. Original skirting and mouldings are met neatly.

Our quotes are written in plain words. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Practical tips

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Clear the bay or window area before the design visit
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Think about the cushion you’d like and who will make it

When we have finished fitting, the seat and its storage are ready. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Keep heavy objects and sharp edges off the fresh paint.

Don’t block the grille with cushions or things stored in front of it. A clear grille keeps the room warm and the seat at an even temperature. Things stored near a radiator stay warm, so choose what goes there with that in mind.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Honest limits

Not everything around window seats is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • New sockets or lights near the window, which are for your electrician
  • Any change to radiator pipes, which needs a plumber
  • Making the seat cushion, which isn’t our work

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Window seats in Hornsey: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 63% of the housing in the area around Hornsey, with about 18% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Hornsey include Tower of Old Parish Church of St Mary (Grade II*), under half a mile east, and Church of St John the Baptist (greek Orthodox) (Grade II*), less than half a mile east. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. More than half of the homes in the streets around Hornsey (about 63%) were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Sash and bay windows are common in houses of that age, and they’re natural places for a window seat, with a grille where there’s a radiator below.

If you live near Priory Park, window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. For families living near St Mary's CofE Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of Holy Innocents, window seats can be scribed to follow a bay that is rarely square.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Ready-made seats rarely allow for a radiator. Placed in front of a radiator, they block the warmth. We design a grille into the seat so the radiator keeps working. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it cannot tip, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Questions we are often asked

Does a conservation area in or near Hornsey affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

How do you fit window seats in a flat in Hornsey?

At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. Window seats are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Which materials go into your window seats?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The frame and seat top are birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws well, while the fronts and grilles are MDF, which paints well. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it’s useful to be around at the end.

What happens when you come to measure?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.
