Bespoke kitchens in Old Chiswick: what you get

You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and we design the cabinets around them. We plan each space around the appliances you have chosen, from the oven housing to the dishwasher. Your quote sets out the materials and finish. Typical reasons to get in touch are a pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers and an island where space allows, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Wall cabinets need firm fixings, and older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick. Since a large share of homes around Old Chiswick are that old, each wall is checked before deciding where heavy cabinets go. Where a wall will not carry the weight, open shelves or tall floor-standing cupboards can take over.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

From workshop to your room

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking on terraced streets can be tight, particularly in a controlled parking zone, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement.

  1. We start with how you cook and what the kitchen needs to hold.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout. We note where the water, gas and sockets are now.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are made in our workshop.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician. We don’t arrange these trades ourselves.

How to prepare

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Arranging a design visit

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

Where other trades come in

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Knocking through or rebuilding walls
  • Connecting sinks, taps and dishwashers
  • Any work on the gas supply

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Larders and dressers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Islands where space allows

Tips worth knowing

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Share the layout with your other trades
  • Measure the route into the kitchen
  • Choose your appliances before the design is final
  • List what needs a home in the kitchen

The appliances you’ve chosen come with their own care instructions, and the worktop you chose will have its own care advice too.

Measure the route into the kitchen along with the room itself. Workshop-made furniture comes in sections sized for stairs, hallways and lifts, so let us know about any narrow spots.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Old Chiswick

My house in Old Chiswick is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How are bespoke kitchens priced?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The size of the room, the number of units and the finish all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Do you handle the gas and electrics for the kitchen?

No. We make and fit the kitchen cabinets. Your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, and we design around where their work goes.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

How long does fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll talk it through at the design visit.

Hogarth's House, about 0.4 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. Near listed buildings like Walpole House, less than half a mile north-east of the centre of Old Chiswick, older homes may keep original joinery that kitchens can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
