Bespoke kitchens in Chiswick

Some kitchens suit a dresser, with cupboards below and open shelves above, and it suits many period homes. We make dressers to fit the wall they stand against, scribed to follow it and painted to suit the room. Most enquiries start with spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets and extra cupboard space, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Narrow hallways in Victorian and Edwardian terraces set limits on how long a cabinet or panel can be. Around Chiswick, a large share of homes were built before 1919, so the route to the kitchen is measured during the design visit. Long runs are made in sections and joined on site.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

When is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

What happens on fitting day

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so neighbours may appreciate a note before fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. We start with how you use the kitchen and what isn’t working. It helps to know the worktop, sink and appliances you have in mind.
  2. We come to measure up and plan the layout with you, including where the sink and appliances will go.
  3. You get a written quote for the cabinets, with the materials and finish set out.
  4. We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop.
  5. We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician handle the plumbing, gas and electrics. We do not arrange those trades, so it is useful to book them early.

Preparing the room

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Ask for a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Kitchens in Chiswick: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Chiswick were built before 1919 (about 53%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 14%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. Chiswick is partly covered by the Glebe Estate Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. More than half of the homes in the area around Chiswick (about 53%) were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Older houses often have narrow kitchens at the back, with floors that slope, so cabinets are scribed and levelled on site.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Hogarth's House, about 0.2 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. For an older house near St. Nicholas Church, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.

Chiswick is in the London Borough of Hounslow, about 4 miles west of Hounslow. From period terraces to newer flats in Chiswick, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Our work takes in places right across Hounslow.

Practical tips

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. These habits help most:

  • Think about how you cook and what you store
  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Deal with damp walls first
  • Pick the oven, fridge and dishwasher first

New paintwork takes a while to harden after fitting. Go easy on the painted surfaces at first and avoid harsh cleaners. After that, a soft cloth and mild soapy water is enough.

Talk to your plumber, electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register early. Their work and ours need to fit together, so it helps if everyone knows the plan.

Questions we’re often asked

I live near Chiswick station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room.

Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in Chiswick?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Do you supply the worktop and appliances?

We plan the kitchen around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose. Knowing their sizes early helps, and your quote sets out what’s included.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

How long does fitting take?

Every kitchen is different. The time the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

What prompts bespoke kitchens in Chiswick

Kitchens in older homes can be short on cupboard space. A larder or tall units can change how much you can store than a row of standard wall units.

Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:

  • A pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers
  • A dresser that suits a period house
  • More storage in a small kitchen
  • A kitchen finished in your colours

Close to Turnham Green? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
